The ‘Block Your Date’ invite reveals key details of the upcoming small-capacity Bavarian supersport

In a surprising move, BMW Motorrad India has sent a ‘Block Your Date’ invite for a new motorcycle that will debut on July 15, 2022. While the details are bleak at the moment, the teaser image shows the tail light of the motorcycle which is straight off the TVS Apache RR 310. So, what is BMW up to?

The small capacity supersport segment is becoming competitive globally and looks like the German marque wants a share of the pie. But instead of bringing an all-out revolutionary product like it did with the S 1000 RR, BMW seems to have taken an easier route by simply rebadging the TVS Apache RR 310.

The single teaser image released shows the same windscreen, mirrors and even the pillion grab rail from TVS’ supersport. However, by the looks of it, BMW will drape the supersport in its iconic Red, Blue and Violet tricolour. We can also expect some minor aesthetic changes like different seats or headlights. And while this could be disappointing for us enthusiasts, this formula could work wonders for the brand.

In the last five years since the Apache RR 310 made its debut, TVS has made numerous changes to the motorcycle to make it one of the finest and features-rich motorcycles in the segment. In fact, now customers get an option to arm their RR 310s with fully-adjustable suspension and sportier ergonomics. And knowing BMW, they might just throw-in the superior hardware as standard, which is very crucial to determining the G 310 RR’s success.

Currently, the global top dog of the segment, the 2022 KTM RC 390, lures you with preload-adjustable suspension (skipped on the Indian model), cornering ABS and traction control and a TFT display, something that Japan’s Big Four or even other brands aren’t offering right now. So, with BMW G 310 RR stepping into the game armed with its TVS-derived hardware gives it an edge over the competition in markets where TVS isn’t present.

Now, onto the next crucial bit – Pricing. Taking in account the BS6-compliant G 310 R (Rs 2.65 lakh) and G 310 GS’ (Rs 3.05 lakh) pricing, BMW could price their supersport at Rs 2.85 lakh. And while that would make it Rs 20,000 more expensive than the TVS Apache RR 310, it would still be considerably cheaper than the 2022 KTM RC 390 that demands Rs 3.13 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).

To sum it up, the BMW G 310 RR could end up being an overpriced iteration of the TVS Apache RR 310 to most of us, but it will be a delight for Beemer fanboys. Most importantly, this move could make Hosur’s supersport a global player.
