Mahindra & Mahindra earlier this year, acquired the legendary British motorcycle brand BSA, through its subsidiary Classic Legends, for Rs 28 crore. The company took this step to revive the brand with new models in the near future. For the home-grown automaker, BSA isn’t the first European two-wheeler company that it has purchased. Last year, it had also acquired Peugeot Motorcycles. However, now, a new report has confirmed that new BSA motorcycles will make their global debut in 2019. The new models will becarry engines displacing between 500-750cc.
The latest acquisition also includes a license agreement with another iconic brand, Jawa. Mahindra can now use both these iconic brands to market the new products and expand its two-wheeler portfolio globally. Rajesh Jejurikar, president and CEO of Mahindra Two Wheelers, said, “We want to bring back the aura of BSA, while also bringing back a commitment to honest engineering. To achieve this we have Classic Legends, which will allow us to move into the premium and niche segments.”
Mechanical details about the upcoming BSA bikes are scarce, but, it is certain that the bikes will be powered by 500-750cc engines. Mahindra also said that there is enough room for new products in the large capacity singles market, which indicates that the new motors might be single-cylinder engines. The company also confirmed that it owns the rights of the 'Gold Star' moniker, which hints at a possibile return of the legendary café racer.
Mahindra already has production facilities in both India and France. Rajesh Jejurikar also confirmed that the company has already started working on the design aspect of the upcoming motorcycles with the assistance of its Italy-based racing division. Moreover, the legendary design house Pininfarina, which was acquired by Mahindra last year will also contribute to the design development.
