EV mobility is seeing gradual acceptance as manufacturers push the envelope further. This time around, the Big Four from Japan, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha have reached an agreement to standardise swappable batteries and replacement systems.
In simple terms, the four brands have agreed to share batteries for their future EVs. This should not only help deal with the volume required but also amalgamate the know-how for batteries and reduce development time and cost, thereby making EVs more efficient and quicker to juice up.
The consortium had been in the works since last year and will now conduct technical verification based on common specifications like weight, size, durability and safety norms. This means that all four two-wheeler giants will work not only in cooperation but also in competition.
In another development, Triumph Motorcycles is also foraying into the EV segment, having teased its first electric bike. And this one doesn’t follow the ‘reach your workplace for the cost of a bag of chips’ approach; instead, it will very likely be a track-happy, performance-oriented EV.
