The 2019 Tokyo Motor Show saw the world premiere of Honda’s two new electric scooters. These scooters are the first to be unveiled under Honda’s ‘e:TECHNOLOGY’ banner that will include electric two- and four-wheelers.

The Benly e and Gyro e are electric variants of Honda’s existing Benly and Gyro petrol-powered delivery scooters. Both scooters have a functional design with a low apron-mounted headlamp that leaves space to fit a front rack. The low floorboard makes it easier to load and unload delivery boxes. Although the two might look quite similar, the obvious distinguishing factor is that the Gyro has two rear wheels, something similar to a trike.

These scooters will feature removable batteries called the Honda mobile power pack. These batteries can be swapped at one of many Honda battery swapping stations across Japan. Battery swapping technology is more time-efficient as it does not require the vehicle to remain stationary during charging, In most cases, depleted battery packs can be swapped for fresh ones in under thirty seconds. This would be quite useful in case of delivery scooters where timely delivery could be compromised by extended charging times.
Honda plans to launch the Benly e along with the charging infrastructure in Japan by March. Sadly, both electric scooters will not come to India anytime soon.
