New Volvo C40 Recharge Electric Coupe SUV Slated For India In 2023

The carmaker aims that half its global sales would be EVs by 2025

  • Volvo C40 shares the platform with the XC40 compact SUV.

  • Should get the same 408PS powertrain with dual-motor AWD.

  • WLTP-claimed range of around 420km from the 78kWh battery pack.

  • Prices could start at around Rs 60 lakh for the locally assembled EV.

After launching its first electric vehicle (EV), the XC40 Recharge, Volvo has announced it’ll bring the C40 Recharge to India in 2023. It’s a coupe-SUV sibling to the XC40 that already exists in overseas markets. The Volvo C40 Recharge is expected to be locally assembled as well and could be priced at around Rs 60 lakh.

Volvo C40 Recharge is a coupe version of XC40

At the front, the C40 Recharge bears a heavy resemblance to the XC40 with its similar front fascia, sharp LED headlights and Thor’s hammer DRLs.

Its coupe roofline has two aerodynamic spoilers and slopes downward to meet split LED taillights.

Inside, the C40 Recharge has a portrait-style touchscreen with Android OS and in-built Google Maps and Google Assistant. It gets premium features such as a panoramic roof, backlit translucent trim pieces for ambient lighting, dual-zone AC and a PM2.5 cabin air filtration system. Similar to the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge has a leather-free cabin.

The C40 Recharge will come with a suite of advanced driver assistance and active safety features such as lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front collision avoidance and a 360-degree camera.

Volvo C40 Recharge powertrains

The C40 Recharge is available overseas with two-wheel drive and dual motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrains. In India, it’s likely to get the same AWD layout as the XC40 Recharge, with a combined output of 408PS and 660 Nm and a claimed 0-100kmph time of 4.7 seconds.

Its 78kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of 420km and can be charged to 80 per cent in as little as 40 minutes when plugged into a 150kWh fast charger.

The Volvo C40 Recharge may be quite similar to its conventionally designed sibling, but it’ll bring more diversity to the EV market. Alongside the XC40 Recharge, it’ll rival the Kia EV6 and upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 upon launch next year. Given that it’s imported via the CKD route, the C40 Recharge is likely to be priced at around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
