Aprilia SR Storm Expert Review
The Aprilia SR Storm 125 is a sporty scooter from Aprilia and is the brand’s most affordable product in the country. Though it is from the SR series, the Storm 125 stands apart from the standard Aprilia SR 125 due to its sporty graphics, different engine and chunkier, block-pattern tyres.
Design
The Aprilia SR Storm 125, belonging to the same family, features the similar bodywork as the SR 160, but it features different graphics and fatter tyres. The apron-mounted LED headlight looks sleek, and goes well with the slim and sporty bodywork. The chunky block pattern tyres, along with the graphics, makes the scooter look more rugged.
Engine, Mileage and Performance
The Aprilia SR Storm 125 is powered by a 124.49cc air-cooled 3-valve single-cylinder engine which produces 9.92PS at 7700rpm and 9.7Nm at 6000rpm, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine is mostly refined, with adequate power, but you have to work a bit (read: use aggressive throttle) to make it go faster. When you want more speed, the scooter doesn't respond quickly to the throttle, especially at higher revs.
The fuel injection calibration could be improved. At times, the revs would stay up even after closing the throttle, causing unintended acceleration. Although not a major concern, it did feel a bit unusual. The Storm 125 gets a 6.5-litre fuel tank and delivers a mileage of 50.08kmpl.
Handling and Ride Quality
The Storm 125 steers nicely, but its chunkier tyres mean it's not as sharp or agile as the SR 160. The slightly heavier feel in the corners takes a bit to get used to, but you soon learn to trust the Storm's confidence and precision. The Storm 125 smoothly goes over small bumps and potholes, but you will feel the bigger bumps when riding fast. But with a passenger, the scooter remains stable even on bumpy roads.
Comfort
The Aprilia Storm 125 has a firm seat that makes it a bit uncomfortable on longer rides. The grab rail at the back is also not that easily accessible as compared to the SR 160. The smaller wheels and retuned suspension lowers the scooter and provides a seat height of 775mm, which is easily accessible for shorter riders.
Features
The Storm 125 gets a semi-digital instrument panel borrowed from the SR 160, showing speed on the analogue part and features like a trip meter, fuel gauge, and time on the digital display. The scooter has a 6.5-litre fuel tank.
The Storm 125 misses out on many features like a multifunction key slot for ignition and boot opening, external fuel filler, USB charging socket, or a boot lamp. Disappointingly, it doesn’t get a silent starter or more importantly, smartphone connectivity with turn-by-turn navigation.
Should You Buy The Aprilia SR Storm 125?
The Aprilia Storm 125 doesn't have as many features as the other 125cc scooters. People like the emotional appeal of Aprilias, and that’s what they will see in the Storm too. It's better to ride than the SR, with more comfort and versatility. Even though it costs more than its rivals, it's a good choice for a stylish Italian scooter that can tackle all kinds of roads.
