The Triumph Speed 400 is the latest, smallest-capacity bike from Triumph, and is the most affordable Triumph bike in India as well as the world. It’s designed to rope in more budget-conscious riders into the Triumph bandwagon, while ensuring highway-worthy performance and top-notch fit-and-finish levels.

Price: The Triumph Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2,34,497 (ex-showroom).
Features: The Triumph Speed 400 comes with all-LED lighting, bar-end mirrors, switchable traction control, and Bosch dual-channel ABS. Its semi-digital instrument cluster lacks smartphone connectivity or navigation, but is pretty info-laden, complete with gear position indicator, distance-to-empty readout, and tell-tale lights. There’s even a USB-C port to keep the handlebar-mounted electronic devices charged up. As a part of the accessories catalogue, Triumph offers heated grips, indicators and luggage options too, all with a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
Engine: The Triumph Speed 400 is powered by a 398.15cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that churns out 40PS at 8000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6500rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed transmission with a slip-and-assist clutch. It comes with a generous 16,000km service interval.
Suspension, Brakes & Other Details: The engine nestles inside a hybrid spine/perimeter tubular steel frame with a bolt-on rear subframe. It is linked to a 43mm inverted Big Piston Fork offering 140mm wheel travel, and a preload-adjustable gas-charged monoshock with remote reservoir with 130mm wheel travel. The motorcycle rolls on 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels wrapped in Apollo Alpha H1 rubbers. Braking is via a 300mm disc up front (with a radial caliper) and a 230mm disc at the rear, both from ByBre. The bike comes with a 13-litre fuel tank, an accessible 795mm tall seat, and a light kerb weight of 170kg.

Triumph Speed 400 Expert Review
The Triumph Speed 400, along with a few other bikes, disrupted the two-wheeler market in India last year by offering premium quality at a very affordable price tag. But, does its appeal, on paper, translate to the road. Let’s take a look:
Design
The Speed 400 gets gorgeous retro looks with an aesthetically proportionate design language. The round headlight with the beautifully carved fuel tank, bar-end mirrors and the upswept exhaust give it a unique presence on the road, catching eyeballs wherever it goes. The build quality is probably the best in the segment and looks even better in the flesh.
Engine, Performance & Mileage
The Triumph Speed 400 is powered by a 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine producing 40PS at 8000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6500rpm. The motor is pretty quick for a neo-retro roadster as we recorded a 0-60kmph acceleration time of 3.49 seconds and 0-100kmph time of 8.15 seconds during our tests. It is not as quick as the KTM 390 Duke and that is not what the bike is all about because it is not a streetfighter that’s supposed to provide manic performance at all times. The engine is very tractable as it has a very good torque spread from 2500rpm - 9500rpm. You can easily do speeds of 45-50kmph in sixth gear, making the bike quite easy to ride in the city and also cruise at speeds of 110-120kmph on the highway without much vibrations.
Handling & Ride Quality
The Speed 400 gets a very well-balanced chassis and agile handling characteristics. It leans into corners easily and can be flicked from one side to the other effortlessly while maintaining good stability all the time. The brakes offer good bite and the Apollo Alpha H1 tyres offer great grip, adding to the great handling capabilities of the bike.
Comfort
The 43mm inverted fork and gas-charged monoshock suspension is very plush and does a fantastic job of soaking up bumps and potholes, perfect for our Indian road conditions. The 790mm seat along with the wide single-piece handlebar and mid-set footpegs give the bike a comfortable, upright riding posture and allows you to ride the bike in any manner you wish to. The seat cushioning could’ve been a bit better as you can feel a bit uncomfortable after riding the bike for more than an hour and a half.
Features
The Triumph Speed 400 gets a semi-digital instrument console with an analogue speedometer and an LCD screen showing tachometer, odometer, trip meter and other regular readouts. It doesn’t get smartphone connectivity, which is a big miss for a bike of this price tag. It does however get a USB charging port and traction control, which works flawlessly, is not very intrusive and if you switch it off, it stays that way even when you turn the engine key off.
Should You Buy The Triumph Speed 400?
The Triumph Speed 400 offers a great package of beautiful looks, exceptional fit and finish levels, good performance, great handling characteristics and a very comfortable riding experience. Yes, it misses out on smartphone connectivity but as a neo-retro roadster, it has everything else well covered. And at a price tag of Rs 2,34,497 (ex-showroom), it offers great value for money and the most affordable way to experience a Triumph motorcycle.

Fantastic Bike In This Segment
In September 2023, I made the exciting purchase of the Speed 400 bike in Mumbai, shelling out 2.79 lakhs for this remarkable machine. After more than a month of ownership, I've compiled my experiences to offer a comprehensive overview. On the positive side, the Speed 400 impresses with its incredible performance. With a lightweight build, it feels agile and nimble, responding eagerly to throttle inputs. The torque delivery, especially beyond 6k rpm, is a source of sheer delight. Looks-wise, it's a showstopper from every angle, boasting a retro charm, golden-finished front suspension, and a sleek, minimalist design. The bike's braking and suspension systems are impeccably tuned, ensuring superb stopping power. The build quality is another highlight, with all components exhibiting top-notch craftsmanship. Buttons are sturdy, wires neatly managed, and there's a sense of precision in every detail. Comfort is not compromised either, as the seating posture and cushioning ensure long rides are fatigue-free. However, the Speed 400 isn't without its drawbacks. The dashboard has some minor issues, including difficulties with resetting the time and erratic fuel indicator behavior. Vibrations become noticeable after 7k rpm or at speeds exceeding 120 km/hr, albeit subtly. In heavy traffic, the bike tends to heat up, although it handles highway journeys without issue. There are signs of wear on the gear-shifting levers, causing occasional false neutrals, which I hope will be resolved after the first service. Additionally, there's a slight delay in throttle response, particularly in 2nd gear. Riders may also find themselves sliding towards the tank more often than desired, a situation that should improve with knee grip pads. The bike is prone to mud splashes, necessitating regular cleaning of the seat's lower end and the area near the rear suspension. Lastly, mileage varies significantly, with city riding yielding around 25 km/l and highway trips ranging from 28 to 38 km/l, depending on riding style. Despite these minor quirks, the Speed 400 shines as a formidable machine. It might take some time to fully appreciate its capabilities, but it excels on open roads, effortlessly tackling bends and straights. With the first service yet to come and more miles to be added, my love for this bike is bound to grow. Overall, it's a fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable addition to my riding experience.

The triumph speed 400 is no sports bike, But it’s got ‘sporty’ written all over it, In the way it handles and rides.The suspension is tuned on the softer side to offer good ride quality in indian riding conditions, And it doesn’t disappoint.Pushing it hard around corners, The softness is apparent, But not wishy-washy.It’s not rigid or stiff as a sportbike, But offers very good grip and balance, Something which will be welcomed by new and experienced riders alike.The brakes, With dual-channel abs, Offer progressive performance, And won’t surprise you with an extra strong bite, But offer sure-shot and composed stopping power, So no complaints in that department as well.It may be the most affordable and accessible model in its line-up, But triumph has hit it out of the park with the new speed 400.Yes, It’s difficult to find fault with this baby, And that’s saying something!.

After driving my speed 400
After driving my speed 400 for 3 months i can share my experience.Positive feedback * no doubt of the power this machine generates, Its simply amazing i’ve pulled it to 175km/h* comfort ride for both city and highway negative feedback* too much of highdling even while it is in nutral while riding* engine gets off even while riding * too much of vibration * gear shifting is very hard specially in 2nd and 3rd gear.* no proper reading in odo meter, Odo meter is given only to fill the space near the handle bar.Its of no use.* mileage drops every alternator refuel* my riding is decent an average of 60-70 in city even though the mileage i get is 22km/l that is pathetic.Service of triumph specially keerthi triumph in bangalore disgusting even the dealership is disgusting.People who are willing to buy triumph without caring about the expenses feel free to buy.Thanks.

It redlines at about ~8500 rpm so all the power is delivered at the top end. 80% of Torque is available from 4000 rpm with a maximum torque of 37.5Nm@6500 rpm, so it feels very torqee, because of its light and compact body. Vibrations are there after 6000 rpm but it feels more pleasant in 4th to 6th gear in that upper rev band. The engine can easily sit on 6-7K rpm for long hours and cruise at about 120kmpl. Not much heat related concerns even in traffic, the radiator does its job well, but yes it does heat up a little bit, which is why prefer riding on highways.
