The 5-speed AMT is paired with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and is offered in the XT, XZ+, and XZ NRG variants of the Tiago CNG. All three variants command a premium of Rs 55,000 over their respective manual transmission counterparts. The Tiago is Tata Motors’ entry-level hatchback. Prices for the car start at Rs 5.60 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered in five broad trims with two powertrain options, which includes a CNG variant. Also, Tata Motors offers an all-electric version of the Tiago, called the Tiago EV, which gets minor cosmetic differences.

Tata Tiago Key Highlights

Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. Notably, it has received a four-star rating in the Global NCAP safety tests, establishing it as one of the safer options in its segment.

Both engines are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while the petrol engine also offers a 5-speed AMT. The claimed fuel efficiency figure of the 5-speed MT is 20.01kmpl while that of the 5-speed AMT is 19.43kmpl. The CNG variant has a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.49km/kg. Tata Tiago Pros and Cons

Tiago Advantages

Attractive design that has aged well. Great build quality and the 4-stars in Global NCAP Safety test. CNG available with AMT for added convenience. Good features set that includes auto folding wing mirrors, climate control and a rear view camera with dynamic guide lines as some of the highlights.

Tiago Disadvantages

Three cylinder engines lack punch and are noisy. Not as spacious as rivals.

Tiago Expert's Conclusion

The Tiago is a well specked city car that offers a balanced set of features, comfort and performance with a class leading safety rating.

Tata Tiago Expert Review

The Tata Tiago is an entry-level hatchback priced in the Rs 5.5-8 lakh segment. It is the most affordable car by Tata Motors and is a great option for those wanting to buy their first car. In a similar budget, you can also consider cars like the Maruti WagonR, Maruti Celerio, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

The Tiago was first introduced in 2015, and has since then received minor updates. The last update came in 2022, where it got a minor facelift and some new features. Notably, the Tiago is no longer available with a diesel engine option. You can, however, choose between CNG and an EV option.

Exterior

Design has always been a strong highlight of the Tiago. Tata Motors has worked hard to ensure the Tiago does not remind people of the old Indica or the Vista, and it has succeeded in doing so.

The Tiago isn’t a particularly large hatchback, measuring a little under 3.8 metres in length. However, it’s sharp design and eye-catching colors will make you notice. With the update, Tata redesigned the front profile of the Tiago, making it look similar to the larger Altroz.

New projector headlamps, a larger gloss black grille and a redesigned bumper make it easy to distinguish the new model from the old one. The bumper looks sportier and has fog lamps and daytime running lights (DRLs) as well.

From the side, not much has changed since 2015. The shape is the same, but you will notice newer 15-inch dual tone alloy wheels here. Do note that the top-spec Tiago CNG variant gets 14-inch steel wheels designed to look like alloys. The side also features turn indicators on the outside mirrors.

Moving onto the rear, the new bumper is the only change that’s immediately noticeable. We do like how Tata Motors has neatly integrated the camera on the boot, and also the little spoiler spats on the roof.

In its segment, the Tiago is among the most balanced looking designs. The design has aged well, and will not look tacky or outdated years from now.

Interior

The doors of the Tiago open wide. Seats are set on the lower side compared to something  like a WagonR, and thus requires a little more effort to get in and out of. If elders in the family intend to use the vehicle, please keep this in mind.

Once inside, the black-beige interior scheme of the Tiago will feel welcoming. Quality of materials is what you’d expect from a car in the category. Nothing exceptional, but nothing to complain about either. From a design standpoint, the biggest difference is the new steering wheel. Borrowed from the Altroz, it has a flat-bottom design and a rich-looking leather wrap in the top spec models.

There’s a lot of functionality built into the cabin. Storage spaces are plenty between the door pockets, the centre console and the large glovebox.

The front seats can accommodate large individuals quite comfortably. A wide seat back and adjustable headrests, along with an adjustable seat height makes it easy to be comfortable here. However, we wish the front seat had a little more support for the underthigh.

At the rear, space is surprisingly good for a vehicle this size. Anyone up to 5’10” should be quite comfortable here, even with the front seat occupied by anyone similarly sized. Those taller will find underthigh support and headroom to be less than ideal. Tata Motors should have also considered offering a central armrest at the rear to make longer journeys comfortable. As it is, given the relatively narrow width of the Tiago, seating three occupants at the rear is a a challenge.

Boot Space

The Tiago CNG now features two smaller cylinders with a combined capacity equivalent to the previous single 60-litre CNG tank. Placing these cylinders closer to the boot floor has significantly increased the available boot space, allowing for the accommodation of an overnight suitcase, a duffle bag, and a laptop bag simultaneously. Tata has ingeniously managed to incorporate a spare tyre beneath the boot floor, adding to the practicality of the design.

Features

In terms of features, the Tiago is reasonably well-equipped. The top-spec variants feature

Keyless Entry

Push-Button Start-Stop

Automatic Climate Control

Height-adjustable Driver’s Seat

Powered Mirrors

Day/Night IRVM

Tilt-adjust Steering

Reverse Camera

As far as infotainment goes, Tata offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the higher variants of the Tiago. Resolution, by today’s standards is strictly average and response time isn’t as quick as you’d expect. However, this is paired with a fantastic 8-speaker sound system which might have you forgive the slightly sub-par touchscreen experience.

The Tiago gets a fully-digital instrument cluster. This black and white read out is clear, but feels a little cheap and out of place in an otherwise rich looking cabin.

Safety

All variants of the Tiago get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control and a tyre puncture repair kit as standard. The top model also features a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The Tiago scored a 4 star rating in the crash test conducted by Global NCAP. Do note that the crash tests were conducted under the older norms. Under the new norms, the safety rating could be lower.

Drive

One of the primary complaints about the Tiago has been the rough-sounding three-cylinder engine. In terms of output, it matches the four-cylinder engines from Maruti Suzuki, but it simply isn’t as refined or smooth.

Performance is acceptable for city driving. With the light clutch and gear shifts, the Tiago is quite easy to drive for daily commutes. With its compact size and quick steering, the Tiago seems ideal for driving within the city. Out on the highway, you will have no troubles maintaining 80-100kmph. However, if you want to overtake traffic, or come across steep inclines, you will have to downshift to make progress.

Tata Motors is also offering an AMT, which offers convenience. You operate the vehicle exactly like a proper automatic. However, it’s best to keep in mind that this is a cost-effective solution. In this case, you will feel the gearshifts to be slow and sometimes accompanied with a jerk. This is especially true when you need a downshift. In such cases, it’s better to shift the AMT to manual mode.

With CNG, there’s not a huge difference in performance, especially inside the city. Just that it will require you to adopt a slightly more relaxed driving style. It’s only on the highway that you will feel the need to switch back to petrol.

The Tiago has a balanced suspension setup. It’s comfortable over broken roads and does not toss occupants around. High speed stability is acceptable too.

Tiago CNG AMT Drive Impressions

The Tiago iCNG delivers a smooth driving experience that may leave you questioning whether you're running on CNG at all. With seamless startup on CNG and negligible additional noise or vibration from the engine, it offers ample power for maintaining speeds of 50-60 kmph and executing overtakes. While acceleration at higher RPMs may feel somewhat lacking, particularly on highways, the car excels in urban environments.

With the introduction of the AMT, the Tiago iCNG has significantly enhanced its driving experience. This AMT stands out as one of the finest transmissions offered in any Tata vehicle to date. Its upshifts are notably swift, and the shift logic and tuning are spot-on, ensuring that you remain within the power band without struggling for power. While the downshifts may not be as rapid, they are nevertheless smooth, and the gearbox tends to maintain a higher gear to sustain momentum. Whether running on CNG or petrol, Tata has skillfully calibrated the AMT to seamlessly accommodate both fuel options. Overall, we highly recommend the AMT variant for those seeking added convenience, particularly for city driving.

Verdict

From a city car perspective, there’s not a lot wrong with the Tiago. Yes, it could do with a more refined engine and a little more power for highway drives. On the features front, there are no major misses except for it could do with a newer touchscreen. If you’ve been looking for a small car that’s comfortable, spacious and well-built for your small family, the Tiago is worth considering.

  • I am a owner of Tata Tiago

I am the owner of a tata Tiago xz 2017 model I have been driving this car for more than 5 years now. Pros: 1. The build quality is very good in comparison to the rivals. 2. The ride quality is also very good, The suspension is neither too soft nor too hard, It eats up the p*t holes in a very good way. 3. The handling of the car is very confidence inspiring, you will feel confident in the corners. 4. The a/c of this car is very good, It cools the cabin in no time. 5. The seats are good but not the best, Long distance journeys will be a bit tiring. The boot space is at par with the competition. 6. The legroom and headroom are good if the average height of the passengers is 5’8. 7. The mileage of this car is amazing, I am getting around 15 km/l in cities and 20-22 km/l on highways with a/c. 8. The music system is where the car gets brownie points, It's simply amazing, They have not compromised with the music system. Now I have talked about all the positives, Now let's talk about the negatives 1. The engine is not at all refined, There is harshness when you rev the engine, 2. Vibrations: you will surely feel the vibrations in the pedals, Steering, Gear knob, and Under the driver seat. 3. The night levels are also not that good although it's a 3-cylinder car if you compare it with the competition then it's a bit noisier. 4. There is a lag in the power of this car, Specially in the 2nd gear, You need to work hard for the overtakes. 5. The fit and finish level inside the car is very low, You will hear rattling noises from the cabin, There are uneven panel gaps. 6. The headlights don’t provide good through at night 7. The maintenance of this car is on the expensive side if you consider the quality of the service. 8. My last point will be regarding the service center, You have to be lucky enough to get a good service center. In my case, I am not lucky yet. Overall a good family car if you consider the price and the build quality along with the music system. So this is the review for my Tiago xz 2017.

    Plastic quality

I had covered 130000kms (one lakh thirty thousand kms) in 4 years.I own tata tiago diesel. Its a 3 cyclinder revotorq engine its a quiet peppy engine but performs well. Its a very good car in this segment. All of us know about its saftery its a 4 star rated car.I purchased tiago for its fresh look and build quality. So far i did not faced any serious issues and i am happy with the after sales service also.So far so good. Its very fuel efficient motor which doesnt goes down below 19 in city use and will get around 24 to 25 in highways.I had taken to 150 kmph so its a performance oriented engine also.No big issues had faced broken ac vent sliders due to its plastic quality. But as we know tata is cheap for its parts changed it for 250 -350 around that only. Now i had changed my engine timming belt which cost me around 15000rs but now the car is in the excellent condition.I am sure i can use it upto 3 lakh without any engine problem.I guarantee you its worth the money you pay.And as we all know safety should be our main concerns.Beacuse in the car travelling with us is our loved ones.We get what we pay for tata motors.Trust me its not the old tata motors.I preffer tata motors in future also and i reffer to my loved ones. And be the vocal for the local.

  • I am sharing my opinion about

I am sharing my opinion about my car -tata tiago xz+ 2020 model.Starting with design it looks some what aggressive. The front elements fits to the car very well. The head lamp is of ordinary type with some what average performance. The fog lamps seems good. The back side of the car is of simple type. Now telling about interior it is good looking and spacious. The stearing is smooth and has useful controls on it.The gear box provide smooth shifting. The seats are comfortable and hold the rider tightly on turns. The reverse parking sensors do it's duty very well. The reverse camera is poor in quality. The boot space is adequate and foldable seat adds further volume for boot space when needed. The infotainment system is very lagging. The music system is loud and clear. There is a lot of storage space. The door closing sounds very safe. Now talking about the driving experience it is some what slow in gaining speed. The driver seat is very comfortable. It has a good breaking system with front disc break. The ac will slow down the car for a small degree.Safety features like air bag, Seat belt reminder etc are also present. In my opinion it is a safe and value for money car.

    Car interior

Compared to 2016 and 2017 make tiago, 2018 engines are more refined and fine tuned with no vibration, minimum engine noise, minimum cabin noise. Feature are superb - super sound Harmann musin system, mobile to car speaker blue tooth connectivity both for music, navigation and telephone connectivity. Premium looking car interior. Yesterday I had gone for a 55km + return on a six line highway with trip meter B set to '0'. At 70/80/90 kms/h car was displaying 25km/l though when I checked trip meter A it was showing 15 km/l. I don't understand why there is a huge difference. If you want see 24km/l on your instrument cluster there is a way. After starting the car while it is moving set trip meter A and B to '0'. Let the trip meter B on your display which will show mileage of the current journey only. while keeping the speed 70-90 km/h your will see the mileage figure rose up to 25 - 27km/l which will shock you. i don't know whether it is actual.Anyway it is a good car with reasonable mileage, superb safety and superb features.

  • Stylish exterior to enhance the birds’ look

Stylish exterior to enhance the birds’ look, it is seen in a better with lot of changes made during it are the facial such as all sharp head lamps and slimline shaped grille. Inside, the hatchback has surprisingly acquired comparable roominess; there is solid furniture to seat and several features, which include a touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. Built around the Tata’s 1.2-liter fuel-efficient engine, namely Revotron engine, and honored for safety with dual airbags along with ABS functionality of its structure which rated it high in Global NCAP thereby awarding to it four stars as safety rating level, Tiago has also earned fame. On the other hand, disadvantages are a surging adapting AMT ratio gearbox, high stiffness rides on uneven roads and average engine output. Some of the shortcomings mentioned above may seem serious, but this is a car that represents good value for money and particularly if what you are looking for is a practical hatchback.
