The ripple effects of Ford’s decision to cease vehicle manufacturing at their plants in Chennai and Sanand plants in India, looks like its reaching markets abroad as reports suggest the EcoSport sub-compact SUV will cease to exist in North American markets by mid-2022. If it happens, this marks another major market where the EcoSport will be no more after the carmaker shut production in Brazil in January 2021.
The possibility of this happening looks very likely as the EcoSport sold in the USA is made in India, and Ford has pulled the plug for the SUV here. It also falls in line with the carmaker’s plans to wind down exports by Q2 2022.
While the EcoSport has been Ford’s most popular model in the Indian market, it wasn’t something that was very popular in the US ever. Back home, the EcoSport was being prepped for another refresh, and was spied testing, but recent developments mean it is no longer happening.
The report also suggests that the EcoSport will continue to be sold in Europe with models being produced in Romania. Meanwhile, in India, the EcoSport will continue to be on sale only until dealer stocks run out. It is priced from Rs. 8.19 lakh to Rs 11.69 lakh (ex-showroom,Delhi).
Ford’s future plan for India will be retailing niche iconic import offerings like the Mustang and the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV at select dealerships. It will also continue to offer full customer support operations for their vehicles with service, aftermarket parts and warranty coverage.
