Is the new platform versatile enough to swap four related formats?

History suggests, cafe-racers and scramblers were the radical offsprings of conventional streetbikes looking for wee bit more fun. Hence, the aesthetic and mechanical modifications required to turn a roadster into a cafe or a scrambler isn’t complex. Therefore, we believe, the next format to spawn from the new Triumph 400cc platform after the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X will be the Thruxton 400!

Our hunch was backed by a slide in the Triumph launch presentation which underscored the roadster, scrambler AND cafe racer under the “new modern classic” category. Two of which have arrived. Hence, we believe, a Thruxton 400 is on the horizon, but not arriving very soon. We expect the launch to be sometime late next year.

When it comes to bobbers, that’s another format of bikes Triumph is well known for. And, only a few sub-500cc bobbers exist in the nation, hence entering the segment does make sense. However, it isn’t as straightforward to turn a roadster into a bobber as the motorcycle geometry changes considerably. Hence, we feel this would be the last to arrive and will do so only once the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X have found solid footing in the market.

It is not uncommon to have sub-400cc bikes sharing platforms. It allows manufacturers to cater to different kinds of riders and taste buds without the need to develop bikes from scratch every single time. Triumph is looking to cater to a large market globally, hence having at least these four variants spawn from this platform would make good business sense.
