Mumbai is home to one of the most renowned workshops for bike restoration and customization, called YC Design Motorcycle Restoration, founded by Yogi Chhabria. He and his team are widely known for their exceptional craftsmanship in restoring vintage bikes to their glory. He also has a keen eye for tastefully modifying bikes. During our latest visit to his workshop, the Hero Honda Passion Scrambler build caught our eye. Looking at this scrambler build stirred up many questions in our head which led to some coffee and chit-chat about the build with Yogi himself.

The first question that popped up was why was the Hero Honda Passion chosen for this build knowing that it is a commuter bike with a rather small capacity engine. He said that this was requested by one of his customers from Goa who wanted to do a ‘resto-mod job’ on the bike. Looking at the bike, it looks completely fresh in terms of design and condition. Let’s scramble through what modifications have been done to the bike.

The Hero Honda Passion-based scrambler gets a very attractive paint job. The bike’s fuel tank and side panels have been finished in a metallic blue colour. It sports a ‘Honda’ sticker on the side of the fuel tank and a ‘Passion’ sticker on the side panels. Other parts like the chassis, engine covers and exhaust are painted in black.

Being a scrambler, it is fitted with an in-house wide handlebar that provides a more upright commanding riding position compared to the stock setup. It also gets aftermarket bar-end mirrors. The bike gets an all-LED setup adding a modern touch to the bike. The original drum brake at the front has been upgraded to a disc brake from one of the TVS Apache models, this will give the rider more confidence when on the road. The fuel tank has been replaced with the one from the Yamaha RX100 to get a boxy look. The rear shock absorbers have been inherited from the TVS Radeon and it has been slightly lowered to keep the ride height low as per the customer’s requirement.

Other modifications include custom front and rear fenders, adding to the bike's retro aesthetic. The rear fender features a tail tidy, maintaining a sleek overall design. The side panels have been replaced with ones borrowed from the Hero Honda CD100. It rides on an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup, wrapped in dual-sport tyres, complementing its scrambler nature for both on-road and off-road use. Performance-wise, the engine remains in its stock configuration.

YC Design Motorcycle Restoration has successfully completed 11 years. We congratulate Yogi and his team on this achievement and look forward to seeing more exciting builds from them.
