Whether you prefer moist and tender brisket or succulent pulled pork, the best barbecue joints use smoke and flame to craft melt-in-your-mouth meats
Great barbecue is an American treasure. Just a whiff of sweet wood smoke and sizzling meat is enough to get mouths watering and stomachs rumbling. And everyone—including our Yelp community—has an opinion about the best BBQ.
For our Top 100 Barbecue Spots list, they’ve weighed in on where to find it across the US, from mainstays in the South to lesser-known barbecue hotspots like Philadelphia, Montana, and even North Hollywood, California. Meanwhile, Yelpers in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Dallas have really proven themselves as grill masters—those cities have earned the top 3 spots for the BBQ Recognition on Yelp.
Here’s what’s on the grill in 2024:
Regional flavors rule. From the beef-centric briskets of Texas (now found across the US) to Kansas City’s burnt ends and the tart or sweet pork of the Carolinas, regional barbecue is having a heyday. Some places, like Haywood Smokehouse in North Carolina (#7 on our list), even offer multiple styles—from a vinegary East Carolina sauce to a St. Louis sweet-red. At most spots, you can customize sauce level, to let the meat flavor shine through.
You can’t rush perfection. One thing BBQ joints on our list want you to know: When they sell out, they’re sold out. It takes 10 hours or more to cook meat to tender perfection each day, so there’s no way to whip up another batch. At CorkScrew BBQ (#2) near Houston, even the potato salad requires days to prepare. And when Montana’s Firehole Bar-B-Que (#8) runs out of smoked items, they close up shop until the following day.
It’s not all about the meat. For some barbecue mavens, the main event is the sides—often scratch-made, from smoked beans to coleslaw. Some joints are even inviting diners to mix and match their ingredients in a bowl. At Wright’s Barbecue (#1) in Arkansas, the bowl menu includes a gut-buster called the Rocket Man—mashed potatoes topped with chopped brisket and bacon burnt ends (add mac ’n’ cheese if you’re peckish). At Nevada’s Fox Smokehouse BBQ (#5), you can create a “BBQ Sundae,” piled high with 4 sides and a choice of meat.
So grab a fistful of napkins and line up—great BBQ can be messy, and there’s often a wait at the best places. But at these top spots, it’s worth it.

How we did it: This is an all-time list of the Top 100 Barbecue Spots in the US, according to Yelp. We identified businesses in the Barbecue category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning “barbecue,” then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning those keywords. If a business with multiple locations appeared on the list more than once, we only included the highest-rated location. All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of February 28, 2024. When available, all businesses on this list have a passing health score as of February 28, 2024.
At this Arkansas favorite, the pecan wood—sourced from local forests—never stops burning, and barbecue fans never stop coming. Fans say Wright’s offers “absolutely A+++ BBQ every time,” including the “best brisket in the world” and raved-about Bacon Burnt Ends (which are “like candy”). Sides like collard greens with “a spicy kick,” green beans, and Loaded Mac & Cheese are “often just as good, if not better, than the meat itself.”
Owner and pitmaster Jordan Wright started out serving barbecue at the Fayetteville farmers market, opening this brick-and-mortar location a year later in 2017. By 2020, Wright’s landed on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in America, and later on our list of the Top Brisket Spots. Like most “true no-frills BBQ joints,” it’s counter-service only, with a large outdoor patio where “[kids] can run around.” Even those with special diets can enjoy the food, since much of the menu is gluten-free (exceptions include the Mac & Cheese). If you’re like many customers, you may decide to eat at the restaurant and “spend another 100 bucks on takeout.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Texas Trinity (sliced brisket, ribs, and Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage with 2 sides); Rocket Man (bowl of mashed potatoes served with chopped brisket and Bacon Burnt Ends); Two-Meat Plate (1/3 pound of any 2 meats, plus 2 sides).
Yelpers say: “Awesome barbecue. The things that really stood out to me were the beef rib, it was super moist; the collard greens were incredible, probably the best BBQ side I’ve ever had; the bacon burnt ends were unique and amazing; and the BBQ sauces were all top-notch.” —Yelp Elite Bryson W.
Some say CorkScrew serves “the best brisket in Texas,” which of course are fighting words. But with almost 1,000 5-star reviews and a spot on Yelp’s top brisket list, the quality of its Texas-style barbecue can’t be denied. That’s partly because owners Nichole and Will Buckman source all their meat from small family farms, some of which are exclusive to them. Everything from beef to turkey is pasture-raised, with no hormones or antibiotics. In addition to providing better flavor, “it’s really important to us to make sure that any of the meat we use comes from humanely raised animals,” says Nichole. The result has Yelpers waxing poetic: “Each bite was its own symphony,” says David N. Sides are scratch-made, from the “incredible” twice-smoked baked beans to the “amazing” potato salad, which takes 3 days to prepare. The potatoes are cooked whole and seasoned, then sit overnight to absorb CorkScrew’s secret blend. The next day, the potatoes are cut open and tossed with house dressing, then left to season 1 more night.
While the restaurant is counter-service, staffers work the room—and the big backyard stocked with toys and games—refilling sodas and fetching extras. Nichole places a high priority on “good old Texas hospitality,” which explains the “kind” and “amazing” customer service. Not surprisingly, the lines are long, and popular items may sell out. But you can place your order online 24 hours in advance (a week ahead around the holidays).
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Pulled Pork; Pork or Beef Ribs; Brisket (lean or fatty); Turkey Breast; The Bowl (any 2 sides topped with a choice of smoked meat, green onions, and cheese).
Yelpers say: “The gentleman taking our order [suggested I] get 1/4 lb pulled pork, 1/4 lb lean brisket, and 1 rib—which I did. Simply put, this was hands-down the best BBQ I’ve had thus far. The lean brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The rib was out-of-this-world amazing! Smoke rings on both the brisket and rib were definitely apparent, and the flavor permeated the meat. I wish my visit to the Houston area was longer so I could enjoy such great BBQ again.” —Yelp Elite Kerry M.

It takes more than 16 hours to get the brisket from initial trim to your plate, leaving it “hot, juicy, and flavorful” (and landing it on Yelp’s top brisket list). But that’s not the only item Yelpers are salivating over at this suburban spot. Beef ribs, smoked for 8 hours, are “huge and delicious”; pulled pork is “tender and juicy with just enough smoke”; and smoked turkey is just plain “killer.” That’s thanks to the family-owned restaurant’s founders, longtime friends Eric Tanori and Anthony Garcia, former barbecue hobbyists with a taste for strong-flavored mesquite smoke. If you’re lucky, you might get a tour of the enormous smokers, welded by artisan grillmakers, from “the masters themselves.”
Expect “very generous” portions—sandwiches weigh at least 1/3 of a pound, and that doesn’t even count the sides, from mac ’n’ cheese to “perfect” French fries. But fans say the elote, Mexican-style corn topped with cotija cheese and paprika, might actually be “too good.” Friendly service and picnic-style seating invites lingering over something sweet, such as creamy banana pudding that was “made for the heavens.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Beef Ribs; Brisket Sandwich; Pork Ribs; Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage.
Yelpers say: “Phenomenal! Customer service amazing, meat juicy, sides delicious! We frequent smokehouses often, and this [is] hands down the best smokehouse in Arizona. We ordered 1/2 lb brisket and 1/2 lb pulled pork, potato salad and macaroni on the side. We stuffed our faces and will definitely be back.” —Yelp Elite Savannah V.
Tyler’s can prepare 400 pounds of brisket and 80 racks of ribs on a typical summer day, and still sell out. That’s because owner Tyler Frazer smokes beef that’s “decadently tender and moist, [with a] beautiful smoke ring and…perfect bark.” He learned his craft while working for experts like “BBQ Whisperer” Trace Arnold on the pitmaster’s famous Ultimate Smoker & Grill 18-wheeler, until he was ready to open his own joint. All the meat comes fresh from local processors, and he sources special Malabar peppers from a spice market in Chicago—“they’ve got a really bold pungent pepper flavor without being hot,” Tyler says.
Customers recognize that those details matter. “From the homemade sauce to the sides, you can tell they use high-quality, fresh, and flavorful ingredients,” says Yelp Elite Chanel L. Devotees line up on Thursdays, well before the counter-service restaurant opens, just to get their hands on the 1-day-only Green Chile Mac ’n’ Cheese, which can disappear by 2 pm. But popular items can run out every day, so “get there before the SOLD OUT sign goes up.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Chopped Brisket Sandwich; Pulled Pork Sandwich; Meat Plate (up to 4 meats, with 2 sides and Texas Toast); Green Chile Mac ’n’ Cheese.
Yelpers say: “This place is a gem. The brisket was almost the best I’ve ever had. Ribs were great—textbook tender and juicy. The Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage was breathtaking, absolutely perfection. The cheese really popped [against] the flavor profile of the meat and the spice of the jalapeno to balance it out. Service was fast and nice.” —Remigio L.
Cooking methods are a closely guarded family secret at this table-service spot, from the type of wood used to the inspiration behind their award-winning rubs and sauces. Perhaps because married owners Kelly and Dan Fox started out on the competition barbecue circuit in Nevada, they want to keep their championship formulas close to the vest. That hasn’t kept diners from singing their praises—Fox Smokehouse has received more than 1,200 5-star reviews for such dishes as “ridiculously moist and nicely fatty” Burnt Ends and a sought-after Tri-Tip sandwich that’s “tender and flavorful.”
The menu is vast, with 15 sandwich combos (including a homemade veggie burger) and more than a dozen sides, including “nice and crispy” Fried Okra and Mac & Cheese with a “sweet/smokey vibe.” Mix it all together with the BBQ Sundae, a savory side-lover’s dream bowl packed with Cowboy Beans, Coleslaw, Mac & Cheese, and Mashed Potatoes & Gravy. Topped with your choices of meat, it’s “great for when you don’t know what side to order,” says Yelp Elite Lauren V.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Brisket; Pulled Pork; Tri-Tip; Burnt Ends; Flintstones-Style Beef Ribs (only sold by the full rack, Fridays through Sundays).
Yelpers say: “We cannot speak highly enough of the food. The brisket [was] so tender you couldn’t pick it up with a fork without it melting into pieces. Pulled pork was some of the best I’ve experienced, shredded just right with the perfect texture in every bite. Making the experience even better, they had 2 incredible homemade barbecue sauces to enrich every bite. St. Louis-style ribs…the bone slid right out and the meat stayed in one piece—just as every perfect American rack of ribs should.10/10 BBQ. Just what the soul needed.” —Peyton G.
Joe’s is synonymous with Kansas City barbecue. Owners Joy and Jeff Stehney won nearly every major barbecue competition in the country, from Jack Daniel’s World BBQ Championship to Sam’s Club Cookout America, before opening their 1st location in a gas station in 1996. In a city with a barbecue style named for it (dry-rubbed then served with a sweet-and-smoky tomato and molasses sauce), Joe’s still stands out, with champion-level super-secret spices, rubs, and marinades, and more than 3,500 5-star reviews.
Everything has the “perfect balance of smokiness, tenderness, and seasoning,” from the burnt ends—a Kansas City specialty with “the right amount of crunch”—to the ribs, which “give you a perfect bite every time.” The Z-Man sandwich—named for local sports radio personality Mike “Z-Man” Zarrick and stacked with smoked brisket, onion rings, provolone cheese, and Joe’s original BBQ sauce—is a major fave (more than 200,000 sold every year). Insiders know that you can order it with any meat (or smoked portobello mushrooms for vegetarians). “Many of our local customers order a Z-Man with burnt ends, which allows you to get the best of Kansas City in one bite,” says Joe’s spokesperson Eric Tadda. And while “the line looks intimidating, [it] moves rather quickly,” notes Yelp Elite Mary S.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Burnt Ends; Beef Brisket; Z-Man Sandwich; Carolina Pork Sandwich (hot pulled pork topped with cold creamy coleslaw); The Rocket Pig (pulled pork tossed in a sweet-hot barbecue glaze, topped with bacon, pepper jack cheese, barbecue mayo, and fried jalapenos).
Yelpers say: “Best BBQ I’ve ever had! The burnt ends with a side of mac and cheese were so good that I kept doing the happy dance even hours after we left. I already knew I was going to love it when I first had the ends sans BBQ sauce…and of course, the [added] sauce was delicious! Service was friendly, even being so busy. Ambience was that older restaurant feel, with lots of photos of people enjoying Kansas City…love it!” —Yelp Elite Mel L.
Known for “smoky and moist” brisket with “perfect” bark, this spot is so good that it can be “crowded at 4:30 on a Wednesday.” So good that its sister location in Dillsboro was singled out by Yelpers for the top brisket in the entire country. And founder Joe Beasley says his ribs are just as good. “They’re the very best we can make,” using the largest St. Louis-style ribs they can find, he says.
Like all Haywood’s meats, the “melt-in-your-mouth” ribs are free of hormones and antibiotics, dry-rubbed, and served “tender and smoked to perfection.” For an adventure, try the Pitmaster’s Special—a slightly unusual, rotating dish, like barbecue hash. Popular scratch-made sides include Nana’s Creamy Coleslaw (Joe’s grandmother’s recipe) and Burnt-End Baked Beans, cooked for hours in the smoker, right under the brisket. Desserts are also made in-house, but call ahead if you’re craving the Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie—it’s not always available.
An expansion of this popular restaurant is slated for next year—in the meantime, as Kim H. says, “Be patient and kind. Then, be satiated!”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Beef Brisket; Pulled Pork; Burnt-End Baked Beans; Brunswick Stew (a tomato-based chunky soup packed with barbecued meat).
Yelpers say: “Seriously incredible smoked menu here. Every piece of brisket, turkey, and sausage was perfection. The green beans and baked beans were to die for! I’ll without a doubt come back when [I’m] in the area again…maybe even come to the area just for this! The environment is quite something—literally an old remodeled house in a residential neighborhood. It fits the food for sure!” —Paul K.
Open daily “until sold out,” this Yellowstone National Park-adjacent spot has been beyond popular ever since Guy Fieri visited 4 days after its 2018 opening. The celebrity chef was so impressed by his takeout meal, he paused his family vacation to film a segment of his TV show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” at the barbeque joint. The accolades haven’t stopped since. Yelpers are likely to be “dreaming about this food for a very long time,” because the brisket is “perfection” and the pulled pork is “amazing.”
“I never thought we could create a [destination restaurant],” says Julie Shults, who owns the counter-service spot with her husband, Mike, and constantly circles the dining room to make sure everyone is happy. “It just fills me with so much joy.” There are no combos, so order a little bit of every meat if you’d like. Sides include the “different but tasty” Corn Salad—a chilled mixture of corn, cheese, onion, red bell pepper, and mayo topped with Chili Cheese Fritos. “Service is ridiculously fast, so don’t be deterred by a long line,” advises Caroline G.—but be aware that this seasonal spot is only open from May to October.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Pulled Pork Sandwich; Brisket Sandwich; Pork Ribs; Buffalo Sausage; Corn Salad.
Yelpers say: “As soon as I walked in the door, I could feel that I [had] stumbled across something amazing! The decor brought Yellowstone straight to you. It was rustic, outdoorsy, and ranch-like. The brisket had light flavors of smoke, a crisp outer layer of bark and spice. It paired nicely with the spicy BBQ sauce, [which] had smoky sweet notes with an intense amount of heat!” —Yelp Elite Amy F.
At Pensacola’s Hot Spot Barbecue, the pork ribs are huge. (“Where’d they find these monster pigs?” asks Yelp Elite Rustin L.) But it’s not just the size that impresses at this family-owned and -operated restaurant—the “phenomenal” food is amped up with local oak, which creates “billowing smoke [that] makes your mouth water.” A house-secret rub pays homage to Gulf Coast regional barbecue traditions, according to Cheri Hlubek, who operates the restaurant with her husband, Jim, and his 92-year-old dad, Paul. Cheri grew up in Pensacola, with “a passion for authentic Southern barbecue,” and says their cooking blends traditional Southern techniques with their own unique flair. It’s a winning combination—InWeekly, a local paper, has named Hot Spot its Best of the Coast for barbecue for 11 years running.
Fans also enjoy this “old school, laid back” spot for its “unbelievable hospitality.” And they don’t skimp on dessert—Paul is the mastermind behind the shop’s famous 4-pound homemade pies. “Everything is delicious,” says Jackie F., “but the pie steals the show.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Riblets (burnt ends and tips of the pork ribs); Beef Brisket Plate; Brisket Sandwich; Pulled Pork Sandwich; Lemon Cream Pie.
Yelpers say: “Absolutely delicious barbecue! I can’t say enough about the fall-off-the-bone ribs smoked to perfection, with exactly the perfect seasoning and tenderness. Don’t add sauce or you’ll diminish the perfection achieved by the champion-level chef. The brisket and pulled pork were just as delicious. Great food, great experience—you must enjoy this place for yourself!” —Jim P.
Owner Denny Delauder won’t tell you what’s in his rub—a secret mix of 24 spices that took nearly 4 years to perfect—but he will reveal that he goes through 30 pounds of the special seasonings every month. “No one else in the world has my flavor profile,” says Denny, who opened Delauder’s in a former service station with a “classic old school feel” in 2015. He smothers all his barbecue with that salty-sweet rub before smoking, then serves it dry—while offering homemade condiments that will “make you throw out every sauce [you’ve] got in your fridge.” Denny puts just as much care into his sides: the potato salad from his mom’s recipe; what might be “the best [collard greens you’ve] ever had,” simmered overnight until they’re soft and sweet; and the Fried Mac ’n’ Cheese, dusted with jalapeno powder and crisped on the flat top.
Yelpers say they’d give “50 stars” to this “mandatory food stop for fantastic BBQ.” In fact, less than 2 years after it opened, Yelp named Delauder’s one of the top 100 restaurants in the country to visit, then placed it on our top brisket list. Denny, who operates the restaurant with his wife and kids, is grateful for the support, saying, “Yelp is a huge part of why we are who we are today.” Not surprisingly, the lines can be long; stop by between 2:30 and 4 pm, when there’s usually a lull. Delauder’s has no website, but beware of fakes—the restaurant is so popular, others have tried to capitalize on the name, so if you think you ordered online, you were snookered.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Sneaky Pig Sandwich (pulled pork topped with sweet habanero sauce, sweet onion, and lettuce); Pulled Pork Sandwich; Fried Mac ’n’ Cheese.
Yelpers say: “Stopped in just before closing this past weekend, and we were warmly welcomed by the family-run atmosphere. We ordered the brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, along with some sides—by far the best BBQ I’ve had any time recently! The service was phenomenal and food was amazing. This will definitely be a meal that I frequently look back on.” —Haven H.
