Best Taco Spot in Every State 2024

Best Taco Spot in Every State 2024

From tasty al pastor and carne asada to juicy birria and fresh Baja fish, here are the top taco spots across the US

Move over, Taco Tuesday. With Americans consuming billions of tacos each year, every day of the week is now Taco Day. And the demand is growing: While Yelp searches for “tacos” are still the highest in Texas, California, and Arizona, they’re also increasing in North Dakota (up 51% from the first half of 2023 to the same period in 2024), West Virginia (up 37%), and Maine (up 23%).

Across the entire US, taqueros are shaking up the scene, creating new and traditional versions of the popular handheld meal—for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert. On our Best Taco Spot in Every State list (including Washington, DC), you’ll find tacos filled with everything from classic grilled or slow-cooked meats, fish, and vegetables to french fries or bruleed bananas. There are high-end sit-down restaurants, strip-mall storefronts, fast-casual counters, and, yes, plenty of taco trucks.

Here are some of the taco trends we discovered this year:

Specialty menus. A rising number of taquerias are making just their specialty tacos. Southern California’s Birrieria Little Tijuana focuses on tender, slow-cooked beef birria. At Holy Taco in Orem, Utah, customers crowd in for the highly rated al pastor. And at New York City’s Los Tacos No. 1, you’ll find a stripped-down menu of only 4 street tacos: grilled chicken or steak, marinated pork, and nopales (cactus).

Al pastor on the rise. Could this traditional dish be the hot new thing? A spin on Middle Eastern shawarma, al pastor features marinated pork that’s slow-roasted on a trompo (vertical spit), then hand-carved, loaded on tacos, and topped with pineapple. You can watch the towering trompos spin at Los Garcia Mexican Fusion in Waterbury, Connecticut. In Fargo, North Dakota, Mexico City native Fernando Hernandez named his al pastor-forward restaurant Tacos Trompo. And La Tingeria in St. Falls Church, Virginia, is named for its signature chicken tinga, yet its al pastor has become even more popular.

Mex meets Tex. Do you prefer traditional Mexican tacos or “Tex-Mex”-style? This year, many restaurants offer both. At Tacos Del Chavo in Kennesaw, Georgia, you can pick any of the traditional fillings, then choose your taco type: “Mexican,” on a corn tortilla topped with onions and cilantro; or “American,” on a flour tortilla topped with sour cream and cheese. And just off the New Jersey shore at El Alebrije Mexican Food, you’ll find a classic American taco menu with hard-shell tortillas and ground beef fillings alongside authentic Oaxaca-inspired Mexican offerings.

No matter what style of taco you prefer, you’ll find it on this nationwide list. Ready to discover some great tacos from coast to coast? Save your favorites to the Best Taco Spot in Every State 2024 Collection
