Mandy Draper is a proud Darug woman of the Cabrogal tribe. Her colourful design reflects on the vital role that coral plays to the health of our oceans, supporting marine life from the smallest krill to the largest whale. Without the coral there is no shelter, structure or food to sustain the ecosystem.

“I wanted my design to show the Great Barrier Reef, the corals, the colours, the sea creatures that live nearby, and to include our First Nations people and the role they have played for thousands of years to protect our Sea Country.
The colours I have used on the coral in my artwork are to make a bold statement about the Reef and how beautiful the coral will remain if we keep caring for our Sea Country. The dots and lines in the sea creatures represent the connectedness between our culture and their sea. And the lines and symbols on the side of the artwork represent our people caring for our reef and our sea Country for the future and long term survival.”

The Forever Reef project is a legacy for future generations that is dedicated to safeguarding the biodiversity of corals. The project's goal is to collect living samples of coral species from the Great Barrier Reef before they are extinct. These species will be preserved in a living ‘coral ark ’ that can be used for global reef research and restoration efforts, including activities to rehabilitate habitats and help corals adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.
Everything is connected. Even the air we breathe is impacted by coral reefs. Approximately 50-80% of our oxygen is produced in our oceans by plankton and photosynthesizing bacteria. If our ocean dies, we die."

The Forever Reef project is run by Great Barrier Reef Legacy (GBRL), a not-for-profit research organisation based in Port Douglas, Australia. The team of dedicated and skilled volunteers are committed to working in consultation with Traditional Owners, recognising that First Nations people have a deep connection to their land and Sea Country and play a crucial role in the protection of Australia's natural environment. Progress is underway to create 12 Traditional Owner-led ‘hubs’ along the coast of the Great Barrier Reef. These hubs will store local coral and provide an area for knowledge sharing and education between Elders and junior rangers.
