Pink gin has become very popular, but which ones are a cut above your average?

We asked a panel of independent gin experts to blind-taste a selection of pink gins, including big brand versions from Beefeater, Gordon's and Malfy, as well as supermarket options from Aldi and Lidl. However, only one impressed enough to get our Best Buy recommendation. 

If you like a classic gin and are curious about the pink stuff, be warned – our experts noted that many tasted sickly and synthetic and are more akin to an alcopop than an authentic gin.

What is pink gin?

Essentially, it's a gin-based drink with a 'pink' twist – both in terms of colour and flavour. This is achieved by the addition of pink fruity options as diverse as pink grapefruit, raspberry, redcurrant, rhubarb and strawberry, meaning the flavour profile of pink gins can vary wildly.

If you're expecting pink gin to taste like gin, you might be in for a surprise. Our experts thought many of the options we tested didn't taste much like gin at all. One described them as the 'alcopops of the gin world'.

It may not be for everyone, but it's an undeniably popular drink. It's definitely more suited to those who prefer a sweeter drink – prosecco drinkers might be fans, and those who like fruity options. If you prefer a sharper bite to your booze, options flavoured with pink grapefruit might be more to your taste.

How to serve pink gin

As well as mixing pink gin with tonic to make a classic G&T, you can also use it in cocktails. Check the bottle for recommendations specific to the flavour you've bought.

For example, Malfy recommends serving its Rosa pink gin with lemon juice, sugar syrup, raspberries, egg white and prosecco. And for a garnish, add a sprig of thyme. 

According to Tarquin's, its Rhubarb and Raspberry Gin pairs perfectly with ginger ale and fresh raspberries, topped with a sprig of mint.

How we tested pink gin

In May 2024, we asked a panel of independent gin experts to rate eight pink gins. 

The taste test was blind, so they didn't know which gin they were trying, and each expert tried the gins in a different order to avoid any bias. After all the samples had been tasted and rated, the panel discussed any discrepancies in score and agreed which bottles deserved to be Best Buys, before we revealed what the products were.
