What is an Xbox Game Pass?

Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft's subscription service offering a large game library to download and play on Xbox, PC, or mobile, depending on your subscription. You can play as much as you want, whenever you want — think of it as the gaming version of streaming movies.

You can choose from different plans, depending on your needs. Xbox Game Pass Core for console games costs £7 a month, Xbox PC Pass for PC games is £8 a month; or, for the best of both worlds, there's Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at £13 a month. You can access a variety of big titles, including the new hit sci-fi game Starfield. You can check their game catalogue here

For an avid gamer who enjoys exploring a diverse range of games, investing in an Xbox Game Pass might offer more value compared to purchasing individual games separately.

How much does an Xbox typically cost?

  • The Series X typically costs £479.99 from Microsoft.
  • The Series S typically costs £249.99 for the 512GB-storage model, and £299.99 for the 1TB-storage model from Microsoft.

Both consoles come with one controller, plus cables.

Has the Xbox been discounted before?

If you're wondering what a good price looks like, here are some good prices we've seen each console at:

  • We saw an Xbox Series X on sale for £359 over Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2023.
  • We saw an Xbox Series S on sale for £189 over Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2023.

There was the odd winter deal that had dropped prices even further than this, but they were only for a day or two.

What is the difference between an Xbox Series X and Series S?

The Series X is the more expensive and more powerful model. It can run games in 4K whereas the Series S only supports up to 1440p resolution. The Series X has more processing power, but both consoles can run games up to 120 frames per second.

The Series X comes with 1TB of storage, while the Series S can come with either 512GB or 1TB.

Regardless of which console you choose, you can play the same games and run the same apps, such as Netflix and Disney+, on both. Only the Series X can run physical games though, so if you're looking to save money (in the long run) by buying second-hand games, it might be worthwhile considering the higher-end model. If you're only going to be using Game Pass and playing through that, it may be worth saving your money and getting the S model.

The Series X also can double as a Blu-ray player, too.

What do I need to know before buying an Xbox?

When buying any games console, it depends on how you'll use it and which games you want to play. On paper, both the Xbox Series X and PS5 have extremely similar specs, and are both powerful machines that can game at 4K.

The Series S can save you some money, but at the cost of lower performance and resolution.

Ultimately, it comes down to which console exclusives you want to play. Just remember you'll need a TV or a computer monitor to play on either Xbox.

If you're trying to save money, a Series S and a computer monitor should be a pretty solid setup. You can get a decent monitor for around £100, so be sure to read our computer monitor reviews to find out which budget models performed the best in our testing.

How to get the best Xbox deals

  1. Know what a good deal looks like: If you can get a console, plus games or other extras for the console's RRP that's generally a good deal — even if it seems underwhelming. If you can get a 512GB Series S for £200 or under, or a Series X for £450 or under – that's a good bargain.
  2. Keep an eye on bundles: they can be a great way to save some money on games and accessories you might get later down the line. Some retailers will bundle controllers and games with consoles, so we'd recommend keeping an eye out for console bundles with games you'll want to play. A good rule of thumb when shopping bundles is to subtract the price by £480, then compare prices on the games included vs buying them separately.
  3. Save this page: our experts will be scouring thousands of Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, TV deals, and more to help you find real bargains.
  4. Consider buying second-hand: we've found that you can make hefty savings when buying a new console and games second-hand. You can check out online sellers like CeX, MusicMagpie, and Game, who all have good stocks of second hand consoles and games.
