1. Green and blue kitchens

According to our kitchen experts, the trend for blue and green kitchens will continue into 2024.

'Customers are being more daring with their kitchen choices by straying from the traditional whites and greys and picking dark and earthy tones instead,’ says Ryan Smith, B&Q Kitchens category manager.

‘In particular, muted blues and greens with a matt finish are become increasingly popular,' he adds.

Wickes concurs, revealing that 20% of all kitchens they sell are blue.

If you want to introduce bolder shades without committing to an entirely blue or green space, darker wall and cabinet colours can be balanced by lighter worktops or a more neutral kitchen island.

2. Statement kitchen accessories

According to customer research from IKEA, the way that people use their kitchens has changed since the pandemic.

‘People are spending more time in their kitchens,’ says Clotilde Passalacqua, IKEA's home furnishing direction leader. ‘They are hosting more and enjoying time with their loved ones. This means they want a space which is not just functional, but also beautiful and relaxing.’

That’s why investing in beautiful kitchen accessories, like statement lighting, is becoming increasingly popular. Not only is it a relatively simple kitchen update, but it can transform the feel of your kitchen.

Consider introducing a statement lightshade, piece of art, or a new splashback to give your space an instant refresh.

3. Smart storage

Given that people are cooking and hosting more, effective and easy-access storage solutions are increasingly important.

‘People continue to get creative with food storage and now they are looking for great pantry solutions to keep everything organised and easy to reach,' says Clotilde Passalacqua.

As most people don't have the luxury of a separate pantry, they are choosing to introduce pantry cabinets (typically a full-size cabinet with double doors) into their kitchen.

Introducing racks, baskets, dividers, under-shelf drawers and wheeled storage caddies also helps keep things organised.

4. Fluted and ribbed textures

Including fluted and ribbed textures in your cabinetry is another trend that will persist into 2024.

‘[These features bring] the ongoing panelling trend into the kitchen, whilst also adding texture and depth,' says a spokesperson for Wickes.

This versatile trend includes slatted wall panels, which can also feature on the base of kitchen islands, as well as fluted designs on doors and cabinets, including glass panels.

As well as creating an eye-catching design, some of these textured panels are also designed with acoustic properties to help reduce noise.

5. Sustainable materials

For a more eco-friendly kitchen upgrade, look out for ethical, sustainable and carbon-neutral goods.

Wood is one of the most popular natural raw materials, but make sure you choose FSC-certified wood or plywood if you're buying new.

Consider integrating both new and old elements into your redesign. Sourcing reclaimed and salvaged pieces is a great way to lower your environmental impact and add more character to your kitchen.

Before you do anything, decide whether you need to replace your whole kitchen or could simply refresh your kitchen cabinet fronts, or change your kitchen island? You might also want to think about a second-hand or ex-display kitchen.
