Kitchen costs breakdown
Although the total cost of your kitchen renovation can vary significantly, the proportion of your budget that you spend on each part of the renovation will be fairly similar.
'Expect to spend around 35% for cabinets, 20% for labour and 15% for appliances,' said a spokesperson for Magnet Kitchens. 'The remainder will go on plumbing, flooring, electrics and other expenses.
'On average, a kitchen renovation should only cost between 5-10% of the value of your home.'
To see how the most popular kitchen companies performed in our lab assessments and customer surveys, see our guide to the best and worst kitchen brands.
Kitchen fitting costs
If you choose not to do any part of your kitchen installation yourself, labour will make up approximately 20-30% of your final expenditure.

An island can be a great addition to your kitchen - and if you chose a simple cabinet island (i.e., without any plumbing or electrics), it probably won’t represent a significant increase in the total cost of your renovation.

How to save money on a new kitchen
We’ve put together a list of some of our top money-saving tips for your kitchen renovation:
- Get a detailed quote: When you go to your design appointment, make sure you have a clear idea of what you really need - the cost of added extras like soft-close hinges can really add up. Make sure your quote covers everything you need so you don’t have any unexpected surprises.
- Reuse your appliances: It sounds obvious, but reusing your old appliances will save a lot of money.
- Consider the quality: Cheaper cabinets might initially save you money, but they’ll cost more in the long-term if they need to be replaced or repaired. Make sure you check out our kitchen brand reviews (including durability ratings) before you buy.
- Use your own fitter: Although it’s more convenient to use the kitchen company’s fitter, they are generally more expensive. If you are looking for your own trader, check out Which? Trusted Traders to find recommended kitchen fitters, plumbers and electricians who have been through our stringent vetting process.
RICS research and Which? survey and assessment
RICS provided us with data from its Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) database. It analyses price data from a variety of sources.
Materials costs are based on the best trade prices from a range of suppliers across the UK, which are then benchmarked to reveal the best national average.
Labour rates are based on the current Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council wage agreement.
All of this data is put into a standardised model of the average kitchen. The prices include everything to carry out a kitchen renovation job, including labour, materials, any preliminary work, contractor overheads and profit, and VAT.
Prices are correct as of December 2023.
Our research is based on our consumer surveys and expert lab assessments.
In January and February 2023, we asked 4,378 Which? members who renovated their kitchen in the past 10 years to share their buying experience and opinions of their kitchen.
We also assessed kitchen units from the big-name kitchen companies, including Ikea, Howdens and Magnet, looking at a base unit, wall cupboard and a drawer unit for each kitchen.
We average companies’ scores to find the best kitchen brands.
