How we test exercise bikes
To recommend the best exercise bikes we combine ratings from experienced exercise bike users with scientific laboratory testing and measurements.
- What's the bike like to ride? Our testers go through a set program on each bike that incorporates different speeds and resistance. We pay particular attention to comfort on this test. Some bikes have comfy saddles and handlebar grips, but others are tough and rough on the body.
- Is it safe and stable? Most bikes are stable at low intensity, but once the effort ramps up some bikes we tested can move around and rock, which isn't a good sensation or particularly safe.
- How useful is the display? We take into account the metrics you can track on the display, how clear the display is, and how easy it is to navigate any menus
- How easy is the bike to set up and adjust? We look at how easy the bike is to set up initially, but then how adjustable it is once it is set up so that you can achieve a comfortable fit. Some bikes aren't suitable for heavy or tall riders, but the best will have a multitude of easily adjustable configurations to keep you comfortable.

How to buy the best exercise bike for home use
When shopping for the perfect exercise bike for home use, you'll need to consider your budget, how much space you have, how you prefer to ride and what features you need.
- Spending more usually nets you a more feature-packed exercise bike, but this might not be essential if you're just keen to get moving - we've found decent budget options if you just want a basic exercise bike.
- Floor space is a key consideration - trying to squeeze a large exercise bike into a small room or home will risk it becoming more of a hindrance than a help, especially if it's a shared space.
- If you're particularly tall or short, check that the seat and handlebar can be adjusted to suit your height, as this will affect how comfortable the bike is for you to ride.
- Check the maximum user weight too, as some models - particularly cheaper ones - have a comparatively low maximum weight limit. With the models we've tested, we found that some budget upright models have a limit of just 100kg, while more premium spinner models have limits of up to 136kg.
- Consider an absorbent mat to put the exercise bike on. Without a breeze you'll get a significant sweat on and will want something to mop it up.
