Does TalkTalk put up broadband prices every year?
Yes ‒ so if you do decide to take up a broadband contract with TalkTalk, keep in mind that it will raise the price of your deal at the beginning of April each year.
In August 2024, TalkTalk introduced a fixed price increase. Now if you take out a broadband deal with TalkTalk, it will increase the amount you pay by £3 per month every spring.
If you took out a deal with TalkTalk before August, your contract will include a price increase that is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation as published in January plus an extra 3.7%. This means affected customers saw their bills rise by 7.7% this year.
What is Fixed Price Plus?
This is an add-on available for certain TalkTalk contracts that allows you to fix the amount you will pay for the full length of your contract, by agreeing to pay an additional fee. It can be added to TalkTalk's full fibre deals for £4-5 per month. As a result, you get to avoid TalkTalk's annual £3 price increase.
A fixed price may sound promising, but this offer is generally worth avoiding. To confirm for sure, use the month your deal is starting in, and the length of your contract to calculate how much more you'll pay as a result of the £3 price rise every April. For example, if your 18-month contract starts in February:
- You will pay the original price for the first two months of your contract.
- You will pay an additional £36 (£3 x 12) from that April to the following May.
- You will then pay an additional £24 (£6 x 4) for the final four months of your contract.
That means the price increase will cost an additional £60 over the full length of your contract. Meanwhile, fixed price plus would cost an additional £4 every month - a total of £72 over the course of your contract.
TalkTalk started offering the fixed price promise when its price rises were unpredictable. Customers who took out a deal prior to August 2024 had inflation-based price rises included in contracts. Because you were unlikely to know the rate of inflation in advance, the fixed-price promise used to be more of a gamble – it might cost you more, but it could save you money under the right circumstances, too.
What is the latest TalkTalk router?
TalkTalk's Fibre 35, Fibre 65, Fibre 150 and Full Fibre 65 packages come with its Wi-Fi Hub router, which we reviewed in August 2018. Find out how we rated the TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub.
Customers who sign up to one of TalkTalk's fastest full fibre plans will receive an Amazon Eero router – this will only work on the TalkTalk network.
- On Full Fibre 150, this is the Eero 6 router, claiming up to 1,500 sq.ft of wi-fi coverage
- Full Fibre 500 and 900 includes the Eero Pro 6 – claiming up to 2,000 sq.ft of wi-fi coverage
All routers are provided for free with the package.
What is TalkTalk Total Home Wi-Fi?
This is an add-on service available to TalkTalk full fibre customers and a key part of it is a mesh wi-fi extender system. If you sign up, TalkTalk will send you an Amazon Eero router. If that doesn't result in what TalkTalk calls 'total home coverage', then it will provide you with additional support and, if necessary, additional Eero devices to achieve it. However, there are a few restrictions on how it defines 'total home coverage':
- The download speed in eligible rooms only has to be 10Mbps, despite TalkTalk full fibre services having average download speeds of 77Mbps, 152Mbps, 525Mbps and 944Mbps.
- It will cover a maximum of six bedrooms.
- Basements, cellars and outbuildings are excluded from total home coverage.
Total Home Wi-Fi costs an extra £8 per month and must be taken on an 18 or 24-month basis – if you have less time left on your contract, you'll have to recommit to the new duration. However, if you don't receive total home coverage in the first 45 days, you can cancel that part of your contract (though not your broadband service altogether). Total Home Wi-Fi is included in the Full Fibre 900 package.
Find out more about the system – and what our experts make of it – in our Eero Mesh WiFi System review.
