Dehumidifier features to look out for
From louvres and laundry mode to child lock and continuous drainage, dehumidifiers can come packed with features. Here are some of the key features to look out for when buying a dehumidifier:
- Humidistat Most dehumidifiers have a humidistat, which monitors moisture levels in the air and adjusts the dehumidifier to maintain the humidity level you’ve selected.
- Timer Allows you to program the dehumidifier to turn on and/or off after a specified time. This could save you money if you're on a tariff offering cheaper energy at certain times of the day, or if you want to leave the dehumidifier on for a few hours after going out, but don't need it on all day.
- Wheels/castors These could come in useful if your dehumidifier is heavy – they can weigh from 6kg to more than 16kg.
- Night mode Dehumidifiers can be noisy machines. If you intend to run yours at night, look for a model with a night or silent mode. This will turn off or reduce the lights on the display and run the dehumidifier on its lowest and quietest setting.

How we test dehumidifiers
Our reviews answer the important dehumidifier questions, including:
- How much water does the dehumidifier extract from the air?
- How much energy does the dehumidifier use?
- How noisy is it?
- Does the humidistat function work effectively?
We put each dehumidifier on its maximum setting and run it twice over for an hour at normal room temperature, using a special climate-controlled test room. From these two test runs, we work out the average amount of water pulled from the air.
We then cool down the room to the kind of temperature you’d expect in an unheated caravan or conservatory and run the water extraction tests again. This enables us to see how well the dehumidifier works in the cold.
We also check if the dehumidifier is easy to use, and whether it's an energy hog, or cheap to run.
A dehumidifier must score 79% to be a Best Buy.
