1 October - Vitamix blender set warning over laceration risk

vitamix

Consumers are being warned over sets of Vitamix blending containers because they risk causing a laceration.

The bowls risk injuring someone as the container may separate from the blade base, exposing the blades and posing a laceration hazard.

The risk relates to 225 ml and 600 ml blending containers and blade bases included with certain Vitamix Ascent Model blenders, such as the Ascent A2300i and Ascent A3500i blenders, which are also sold separately, as sets, or in bundles.

Consumers should immediately stop using the containers. Vitamix said it is providing consumers with a free repair kit that includes parts, consisting of a protective plastic shroud to attach over the blade base and additional instruction labels, that consumers can install themselves.

If you have one of the affected products, you can contact the company about the kits via their website

26 September - Urgent allergy advice over peanut contamination

Recalled fillers and salad

People who have a peanut allergy are being warned to avoid eating foods that contain or may contain mustard due to fears of a peanut contamination.

The mustard ingredients can be found in food such as dips, sauces, salads and pre-packed sandwiches.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a peanut allergy product recall alert last week, listing recalled products known to be affected.

The agency said it is urgently working with the relevant local authorities and businesses to identify any further affected products.

It said it has traced the contaminated mustard ingredients to a producer in India called GT Agro Industries and has identified one company - FGS Ingredients Ltd - who has supplied these ingredients for use in UK food. There is no evidence other suppliers are affected so far.

Rebecca Sudworth

The FSA’s director of food policy, Rebecca Sudworth, said: ‘Those with a peanut allergy should avoid consuming products containing mustard as an ingredient until we identify the individual products affected.

‘Parents and carers of children who have a peanut allergy should take care to check the labels of food they buy and if eating out or getting a takeaway, ask the restaurant or cafe about foods that might contain mustard.

‘As soon as we have more information, we will update consumers.’

She advised anyone with an allergy to sign up to the FSA’s allergy alerts.

If mustard is present in a food, it should be labelled in bold on the packet because it is an allergen itself.

If there is a risk that mustard could be unintentionally present in food there will be a ‘may contain’ label for mustard.

FGS Ingredients Ltd has advised their customers to remove from sale products containing the contaminated mustard ingredients.

19 September - water beads

Water beads

Parents have been told to keep water beads away from young children, because the plastic product has been linked to the deaths of children abroad and with causing serious harm to children in the UK.

Water beads, which have been marketed as toys or for crafting, floristry or home decor, are the common name for superabsorbent polymers (SAPs).

When exposed to liquid, including water or gastric fluids, they can expand significantly. Dehydrated beads can typically be as small as a few millimetres in diameter but they can expand to over 400 times that size on contact with liquid.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has said the beads can pose a serious risk of gastrointestinal blockage requiring surgery or suffocation or choking.

It has warned parents and carers, as well as childcare settings, schools and businesses, so they are aware of the potential risks of the beads.

It said the beads should be kept away from young children, under five years of age, and they should only be used by older children under the close supervision of an adult.

Anyone who owns water beads should store them out of the sight and reach of children.

Other common names for the beads include aqua gel, biodegradable balls, floating pearls, gel beads, jelly balls, jelly water gems, sensory beads, silicone orbs, water absorbing beads, water balls, and water crystals.

A bottle of Glen's Vodka
Genuine bottles of Glen's Vodka - pictured here - have codes etched on to them

People are being warned not to drink fake bottles of Glen’s Vodka, which have been found to contain an industrial solvent that can - in severe cases - lead to death.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the alert after finding bottles of the counterfeit vodka contained the toxic alcohol isopropyl alcohol, which is not intended for human consumption.

Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, intoxication, hypoventilation and coma, as well as possible cardiovascular collapse. Anyone with these symptoms should seek urgent medical attention.

The FSA said the fake vodka contained in the 35cl bottles may have a strange smell and taste different to genuine vodka.

The etched lotcode

Genuine bottles of Glen’s vodka have a laser etched lotcode applied to the bottle between the rear label and the base of the bottle, as well as other identifiers on the base including the fill height, bottle size and bottle identification

If you have purchased a bottle with no laser code and no markings on the base or the vodka has a strong smell, do not consume it.

Instead store it in a safe place and report it to your Local Authority for further instruction and advice. If anyone has any information on the manufacture or sale of counterfeit alcohol, then please contact the FSA’s freephone confidential National Food Crime Unit hotline: 0800 028 1180.
