Simba recalls Hybrid Cot Bed Mattress following Which? tests
UPDATE: We've been informed by the manufacturer that following its recall of the Simba mattress, it will be relaunching an updated version of the product. We will look to retest this mattress as soon as possible.
Simba is voluntarily recalling the Simba Hybrid Cot Bed Mattress following Which? tests that identified a potential safety issue caused by cover shrinkage.
The mattress being recalled was available to buy between 8 May 2018 and 10 May 2019 through Simbasleep.com, Amazon, Argos and eBay.
Simba has strongly advised that parents immediately cease the use of the cot bed mattress.
The brand has said it will collect the product from customers and has already issued a full refund back to those affected.

Simba mattress cover shrinkage
One of our cot mattress tests involves removing the cot mattress cover and washing it twice according to the manufacturer's instructions.
We then replace the cover on the mattress and measure it to see if the size of the mattress is impacted at all.
When we washed the cover of the Simba Hybrid Cot Bed Mattress at 40°C, it shrank. This caused the mattress to become squashed when we put the cover back on.
The smaller mattress size could lead to an unsafe gap between the mattress and the cot bed frame, which could pose an injury risk should your baby could trap a limb.
This test is part of the latest British safety standards (EN 16890:2017), which this cot mattress claims compliance to.

Simba's response to our tests
A Simba spokesperson said: 'At Simba, customer safety is our priority. All Simba products go through rigorous testing, ongoing compliance and quality procedures.
'The Simba Hybrid Cot Bed Mattress has been independently tested by FIRA, one of the leading governing bodies for research and laboratory testing who are fully accredited to UKAS standards.
'In light of this recent test from Which?, we have issued a full product recall and the range has been discontinued while we investigate further.
'This impacts a relatively small number of customers, whom our customer services team have contacted to reassure and offer a full refund and returns solution.
'We would like to apologise to those customers for any inconvenience or concern caused.'
Cot mattress safety
- It's vital that the cot bed mattress you choose for your baby is firm and flat.
- In addition, all cot bed mattresses should fit their frames very snugly, to prevent a child rolling into or getting trapped in the sides.
- Generally, most cot beds require a mattress that is 140cm x 70cm in size.
- This means that a mattress should be at the very minimum 139cm x 69cm, but our tests have uncovered several cot mattresses that exceed this threshold.
