The Google Pixel 9 is the newest iteration of Pixel phone – self-styled as 'all kinds of incredible'. But has it raised the bar high enough to be worth an upgrade?
Google's keen to highlight standout features like the advanced AI photo editing, which 'makes the magic happen' with nifty tricks like ensuring the photographer is in the photo by taking two pictures and seamlessly merging them together, or by using the AI 'magic editor' to reimagine the scenery, move people or objects, or make eyesores disappear.
Throw in Google Gemini's voice assistant and a claimed battery life of over 24 hours and it's certainly ticking boxes. But with prices to rival the even latest iPhone, it'll cost a pretty penny.
We round up the best prices for the handset and contracts below, and find out whether considering the Google Pixel 8 could bag you enough savings to warrant the step back.

Google refreshes its range annually and is one of the brands that's often pretty generous with discounts. However, you need to be patient to get the best price, and being new to the market, that time isn't now for the Pixel 9. If you can't wait though, we've covered the best current prices below.
See below for the most up-to date prices on this model, or read our review of the Google Pixel 9:
The 9 Pro has a fair few upgrades over the Pixel 9, though notably one is not a larger display - both are 6.3 inches. That display is sharper and brighter on the Pro though, plus there's an additional telephoto camera and a higher resolution front camera among the benefits. You can see how we rated it in our full review of the Pixel 9 Pro.
The Pixel 9 Pro XL is a significant step up – as you might guess from the price. You'll find a 42MP selfie camera (vs 10.5MP on the 9), a 5X telephoto camera on the rear, along with a higher 48MP main camera, and a large 6.8-inch display amongst the upgrades. Check our Pixel 9 Pro XL review to see if it's worth the high price.

With the release of the Pixel 9, now could be a good time to make savings on the Pixel 8. The predecessor has many of the same features, including the magic editor and photo unblur camera tricks, and similar specifications, though the rear ultrawide camera is only 12MP compared to the 9's upgraded 48MP lens. You can read our full Google Pixel 8 review, compare contract deals, or check prices below.
If you're keen on bigger phones, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is a great option, too. Its screen is at 6.8-inches compared to the new 9 Pro's 6.3-inches, so if you don't want to splash out for the XL you could make a significant saving. You'll have all the same photo editing features as the Pixel 9, plus zoom enhance, though you will forgo the new 42MP selfie camera for a 10.5MP lens. We buy every mobile phone we test anonymously to make sure its the same product that you buy – and to keep our results impartial.
Our phones go through more than 40 different tests in lab conditions. Our camera testing is in-depth – from overall picture quality in daylight conditions, to evaluating colour accuracy, image stabilisation and quality of the optical zoom. We use a robotic arm to interact with the phone to measure its battery life through the day at different brightness settings, and test how long it takes to charge, and benchmark the speed of each phone's processor to compare it to others on the market as well as putting it through daily tasks to make sure you don't end up with a sluggish performance.
For your peace of mind, we also test if the phone is durable enough to survive getting caught in the rain or being dropped on hard surfaces. Read more about how we test mobile phones.
