Research, together with education, plays a decisive role in knowledge generation, dissemination and application. The innovation this creates forms the basis for Switzerland's economic, social and cultural development.
Research is one of the Federal Council’s priority policies. The policy of promoting research, education and innovation (ERI) is guided by the recognition that Switzerland can only maintain and strengthen its excellent competitiveness if it is a knowledge-based society at the forefront of international competition. This policy is applied in close cooperation with the cantons.
Society, the economy and science are mutually dependent and mutually beneficial. Promoting education, research and innovation is essential for maintaining social prosperity and cohesion, sustainable development and Switzerland's attractiveness as a business location. The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI is responsible for implementing the Federal Council's policy in this area.
