Vote.org Applauds Judge’s Decision to Open More Polling Locations in Texas

WASHINGTON – Today, Vote.org, the leading nonpartisan online voter registration and engagement organization, released the following statement applauding a decision from a judge ordering Bexar County, Texas to open more polling locations, following a lawsuit from the Texas Organizing Project.

The judge concluded that Texas “[must] adopt a methodology for choosing countywide polling locations that, absent a lawful combination of election precincts by the Commissioners Court, includes operating a minimum of 388 Election Day polling locations on November 8, 2022 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.” The judge also acknowledged that closing locations would disproportionately affect minority voters, who may have to travel further to vote on or before Election Day.

“This is a win for voters in Texas, who face disproportionate barriers to voting due to the actions of the state’s elected officials,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org. “Voters should have every opportunity to make their voices heard at the ballot box, and the decision to open more polling locations in Bexar County is a positive step in that direction.”
