Static Wordpress Site for a Church

I know almost nothing about Wordpress. I am a retired engineer who codes in Perl. When my church asked for a website, I produced one in Perl as a prototype. The Perl site is not easily maintained, and it looks crummy on mobile. This job is to build a Wordpress website that mimics the Perl website and, at the same time, educate me in Wordpress. This is a straightforward, static site. No ecommerce or anything similar. The new Wordpress site must use the text and graphics from the Perl site, but the "look and feel" can be different.
