Hi. I that is not only ftp server. There are many other open services: ssh(old) smtp(old exim) www pop3 imap mysql I think that you should close from inet or shutdown some of them. And some of them are old and has security valnurabilities, for exmaple, exim.

Hello, If you are just running FTP, this is relatively simple to make very secure. vsftpd is an FTP server which allows you to "chroot" your FTP users which means they cannot browse any other directory other than their own. In addition, I will shut down any other unneeded servers which may be running that would be potential security holes.

In addition to the comment about using vsftpd with chroot, you also might want to consider using virtual users. By using virtual users with vsftpd you eliminate your ftp users having actual system accounts which adds another layer of security.
