Project Description for CFD Analysis
Objective: Perform a CFD analysis to study the airflow and pressure distribution in a custom pipe structure. This analysis should be conducted using free/open-source CFD software such as OpenFOAM etc.
Geometry Description:
1. Pipe Structure:
o The pipe starts along the Y-axis, extending for 954 mm.
o The pipe bends 90 degrees at the end of the Y-axis segment and continues along the X-axis for 4450 mm.
o The pipe has multiple holes (17 in total) along the X-axis segment, spaced at 240 mm intervals.
o Each hole has a diameter of 11 mm.
o Pipe material is galvanized steel (for friction factor)
2. Cylindrical Structures:
o Below the X-axis segment of the pipe, at a distance of approximately 125 mm, there is a flat plate.
o Mounted on this plate are 17 cylindrical structures, each aligned with the holes in the pipe.
o Each cylinder has a diameter of 160 mm and a length of 6000 mm.
o Pore volume of each cylinder is 65%, the air permeability of each cylinder is 6 liter/[login to view URL]
Flow Conditions:
1. Inlet:
o Pressurized air enters the pipe at the Y-axis end with a pressure of 3,8 bar.
o Flow comes from an air tank with 540 liters capacity.
o The flow rate will be calculated based on 150 miliseconds of activation time.

2. Outlet:
o Air exits through the holes in the pipe and enters the cylindrical structures below.
o Each cylinder is open at the top, allowing the air to flow through.
Analysis Objectives:
1. Determine the airflow and pressure distribution within the pipe.
2. Analyze the flow characteristics and velocity of the air exiting through the holes.
3. Measure the positive pressure created within the cylindrical structures.
4. Assess any pressure losses within the system.
5. Visualize the airflow pattern and understand how the air interacts with the cylindrical structures below the pipe.
Software and Methodology:
• The 3D design and analysis should be conducted using free or open-source CAD and CFD software such as FreeCAD, OpenFOAM etc.
• The project involves creating 3D models, the mesh, defining boundary conditions, selecting appropriate solvers and turbulence models, and running the simulation.
• Post-processing of the results to provide detailed visualizations and insights into the flow dynamics.
Deliverables:
1. A detailed report of the simulation setup, including all boundary conditions and solver settings.
2. Visualizations of the airflow patterns, pressure distribution, and velocity fields.
3. An analysis of the results, highlighting key findings and any observed flow behaviors.
4. Source files of the simulation setup for future reference or modifications.
5. A video tutorial demonstrating how to set up and run the simulation using the chosen free/open-source CFD software. This video should include step-by-step instructions covering geometry creation, meshing, boundary conditions setup, solver selection, and post-processing.
