Interstate 40 Resurfacing
Benton CountyThe Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is resurfacing Interstate 40 along a nine-mile stretch in Benton County, from near State Route 69 (mile marker 126) to the Tennessee River Bridge (mile marker 134.8). The project, which is part of TDOT’s Pavement Program, is intended to improve safety, enhance driving conditions, and extend the lifespan of Tennessee’s transportation infrastructure.
Current Status: Construction crews have completed resurfacing one eastbound lane and have begun work on the first westbound lane.
Construction start: July 2024
Estimated completion*: October 2024
Funding Type: This project is 100% state funded.
Traffic Impacts
Construction crews will resurface one lane in one direction at a time. All lane closures will take place at night, and at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.
History and Background
This project will replace the existing asphalt surface with an Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC) asphalt surface. OGFC is a special type of asphalt mixture is designed to be porous and allow for rainwater to drain towards the shoulder underneath the riding surface. TDOT commonly uses OGFC pavement on Interstates due to their high posted speeds and the increased opportunity to reduce accidents during rain events. Learn more about the benefits of OGFC pavement here.
