Interstate 240 Interchange at Airways Boulevard
Shelby CountyThe Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) plans to construct improvements to the Interstate 240 Interchange at Airways Boulevard in Shelby County. The interchange, which provides access to the Memphis International Airport south of I-240, experiences a high volume of traffic, including local commuters, airport traffic, and commercial truck traffic. At present, the interchange is a partial cloverleaf, with multiple ramps and weaving segments creating queuing, congestion, and safety issues.
TDOT plans to replace the existing partial cloverleaf interchange with a single-point urban interchange (SPUI), which will control the flow of traffic through the interchange at a single set of traffic lights. The project will also provide additional through lanes along I-240 and additional grade-separated ramps.
Current Status: This project is under developmentcurrently in the construction plans development stage.
Estimated construction start: This project is scheduled in TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan to begin construction in Fiscal Year 2027.
Estimated completion*: TBD
Funding Type: TDOT anticipates that a portion of this project will be funded through the Transportation Modernization Fund, with the remainder funded by traditional state and federal funding.
