MANCHESTER UNITED ARE favourites to sign Freddie Adu, a 14-year-old American prodigy who is being described as football’s most exciting prospect since Pelé. The teenager, who was born in Ghana, is one of the most coveted young talents in the sport, attracting interest from all of Europe’s top clubs, but United believe they are in pole position to sign him.
Adu was recently invited by Sir Alex Ferguson to join United at their pre-season training camp in Portland, Oregon, and is said to have been “very impressed” by the manager’s attention to him, which has even extended to approaches to his notoriously protective mother, Emelia.
Another factor in United’s favour may be their common association with Nike, with whom Adu recently signed a million-dollar sponsorship.
