Teenager graduates to leading role

She may have only just left school, but Isa Guha has already become the first Asian to play for the England women’s cricket team, writes Robin Scott-Elliot

After breaking into the England team she found herself having to decide between a tour to Australia or school. She chose school.

“It took me ages to decide,” Guha says. “I had to make sure that I did well in my A levels.”

Her reward for that decision came on Friday morning when she discovered that she had achieved the three Bs needed to win a place at University College London. “I was on the team bus coming down to Bristol when my phone went. I ran to the toilet as I didn’t want anyone to know, but my friend was screaming down the phone so I knew I’d passed. It wasn’t as nerve-racking as making my Test debut,” she says.
