Taxi Whistling

December 31, 1915

Sir, As one who has travelled through all the principal cities of Europe and America, I endorse the protests against the barbarous practice of summoning cabs by blowing a whistle in the street. This custom, not only at night, but at any hour, would never be tolerated in any large city of any other country on the surface of the globe. Who would dream of committing such a breach of manners in Paris, Brussels, Rome, Milan, Petrograd, Athens, Madrid, or New York? The practice in every large city out of England is to telephone to a public garage or the “shelter” of a cabstand. Must we wait another generation before this sensible expedient is made practicable in this country?
