Rooney out, Woodgate in for England

Sven-Göran Eriksson announced one of the strangest England squads of recent years last night.

He picked right-back Danny Mills, who has been dropped by Leeds United, and preferred Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who cannot get in the first team at Anfield, to Leicester’s Ian Walker, who was chosen for the last international when his club were in the First Division, but is dropped now they are playing in the Premiership again.

Having waited until after yesterday’s games to finalise his choice, eyebrows were raised further when the England coach omitted Wayne Rooney. Eriksson was at Highbury, where Rooney came on for 33 minutes of the second half of Everton’s defeat at Arsenal.
