Officer was killed after being hurt in fuel riot

THE British officer killed on Thursday when an ambulance was blown up in southern Iraq was being taken to a field hospital for treatment to injuries suffered in a riot.

Captain David “Dai” Jones, 29, of the 1st Battalion The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment, died when the vehicle was hit by a remote-controlled bomb hidden at the side of the road.

He had been caught up in last weekend’s rioting in Basra over electricity and fuel shortages. Yesterday a Shia Muslim cleric condemned the riots. Sheikh Sadbah al-Saidi blamed the violent demonstrations on Saddam Hussein’s security service agents.

Captain Jones is understood to have been hit by stones. He had been given stitches and later required further medical treatment. It was while he was en route
