USB Power Bank: A Ghost Hunter's Essential Tool
A portable charger is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you're preparing for your next paranormal investigation.
Other devices will take preference, like your EVP recorders, camera and video camera, and any ghost communicators. Even your smartphone will be a higher priority if it is loaded with ghost hunting apps and a voice recorder.
But, what happens when you get so excited about your spooky adventure that you forget to plug in your phone in the hours leading up to it? Suddenly, you're about to head out the door with a dead phone and no means of power delivery.
Portable power banks are not just nice-to-haves, they are essentials in any ghost hunting kit. They come in all shapes and sizes, with different capacities and charging ports.
How to choose the best power bank
The "best" battery bank will depend on your needs, your ghost hunting equipment, and the duration of your investigation.
Here are some factors to consider when selecting a portable charger:
Amount of ports: You ideally want a charger that can charge multiple devices at the same time.
Capacity / How much power it offers: Look for portable chargers that are powerful enough for not just charging a phone, but also camera batteries and other devices like the Ovilus.
Easily rechargeable: Once the power bank is drained, you want it to quickly recharge again. Look for one with a solar panel so it can be charged without the need for an electric power source.
Compatibility: You want a battery bank compatible with a USB A and USB C cable, as your ghost hunting equipment will have different charging ports. Consider a wireless charger if you have wireless charging compatible devices.
Size and weight: This may not seem important, but if you are carrying a single backpack with you, you don't want your power bank to take up all the space. Battery makers have come a long way, with power banks becoming more compact every day.
Pass through charging: If you want to recharge your portable battery bank while charging another device simultaneously, you're going to want to look for a device that allows pass through charging.
Charging speed: You don't want to wait a long time for your devices to be powered while on a ghostly adventure.
Uses For USB Power Banks While Ghost Hunting
Most of us use a power bank with a phone, but there are many more uses for these devices, especially when looking for ghosts.
Smartphones: Whether you use your phone as an EVP recorder or a flashlight, or simply have it on hand to call a friend in an emergency, a power bank can easily recharge a dying phone.
Camera batteries: If your camera has removable batteries, a powerful portable charger will have the capacity to recharge them.
Microphones: EVP microphones - used to convert vibrations into sound - are often rechargeable.
Headphones: Wireless headphones with a USB C port that are used along with microphones to capture sound can be quickly charged using a power bank.
EVP recorders: Handheld EVP recorders and wrist watch recorders can be charged using a portable USB bank.
EDI meters: Continue capturing environmental data if your EDI meter's battery is running low.
EMF meters: If there's a lot of electromagnetic activity, your EMF meter may quickly run low on power. That's when a power bank will come in handy.
If these ghost hunting tools all form part of your kit, then you definitely want a powerful USB bank with multiple USB C ports to charge all your devices on the go.
Ghost Hunts Gone Wrong Without Power
We've asked some members of the SpiritShack community to tell us their horror stories of ghost hunts gone wrong without having their devices powered.
Maggie was heading off to the Leicester Guildhall Museum with some friends in the hopes of catching sight of the infamous monk that haunts the library. As she stepped out of the car just before 8 pm, she pulled out her phone to check whether her friends had arrived yet, just to discover it was dead!
Not only did she have to look around for her friends, but her phone - which acted as her EVP recorder and her torch - couldn't be charged. She still enjoyed the ghost hunt, but had to rely on her friends' evidence when they thought they heard footsteps in the library!
Authur was eager to arrive at Margam Castle in Wales. He's heard incredible stories of the ghost of Emily Charlotte Talbot and her piano melodies in the castle's music room. Armed with his ghost hunting kit, he arrived at the castle, excited to spend some time near the piano and in the nursery.
His long-awaited paranormal investigation came to an abrupt halt when he pulled his EMF meter from his pack, only to see he forgot to charge the device. He's still a novice ghost hunter, and this was the only tool he had with him to try and find some evidence.
Disappointed, he completed the tour of the castle as nothing more than an interested tourist, but he's vowed to return - this time with a power bank in hand!
Charlie and Scott are avid ghost hunters from Colchester. When they visited London in May 2023, they were excited to hit up all the haunted locations in the city.
On their second day there, they were set to visit the Tower of London. The last thing Charlie asked Scott before heading out the door was whether he had packed the camera charging cable - this wasn't their first ghost tour!
He confirmed he did, so off they went.
What Scott forgot to pack was his power pack! When the couple got to the Tower, Charlie's camera was a few photos away from dying, and the cable was useless without a charger.
They still had a really good time, and Charlie swore she saw the ghost of Anne Boleyn out of the corner of her eye. Too bad she couldn't get a picture!
Wrapping Up
Having a power bank as part of your ghost hunting kit is essential, especially if you like going on overnight hunts.
Without the means to charge your variety of paranormal detection devices, you never know what ghostly evidence you might miss!
