We are guided by the Jewish value of welcoming the stranger and inspired by American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. Our organization invites the public to explore aspects of Jewish culture and values through engaging exhibitions and programs.

Learn more about our mission and values.

Unfortunately, we do not have any open docent or volunteer opportunities at the Skirball at this time. If you are curious about our Docent and Volunteer Program, please see below for more information.

The Perks:

Skirball docents and volunteers enjoy adult education classes relevant to Museum exhibitions and Jewish values. They meet with our Museum curators for the inside scoop on upcoming exhibitions. Make new friends and enjoy appreciation gatherings and events.

Qualifications:

DOCENTS

Skirball Docents volunteer their time to educate visitors about the objects and themes explored in our exhibitions. We provide extensive training on Museum content, inclusive teaching strategies, and visitor-centered teaching pedagogy.

Our docents are open to new educational programs and techniques, and have an interest in civil rights, immigration, and Jewish culture.

Skirball docents must fulfill the following requirements and responsibilities:

  • Commit to a minimum of eight to ten public tours annually.
  • Commit to attend all relevant docent and tour training.
  • Be actively engaged for one to three hours of gallery touring.
  • Be able to facilitate inclusive conversations and inspire curiosity through storytelling and asking questions.
  • Attend class meetings regularly.
  • Delight in working with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Bilingual capabilities are a plus!
  • Be an active Skirball Member.

“Becoming a docent at the Skirball Cultural Center has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. The Skirball is a truly unique place, one whose values reverberate through the ages.”—Fran Kubrin

VOLUNTEERS

Skirball Volunteers are the welcoming face of the Skirball. They help visitors navigate their way around the campus and answer common questions about the institution. Volunteers help out with concerts, festivals, events, and daily operations.

Our volunteers create an inclusive and welcoming environment, have excellent customer service skills, are team-oriented, and able to move around the campus as needed.

Skirball volunteers must also fulfill the following requirements and responsibilities:

  • Commit to a minimum of ten to twelve volunteer shifts annually.
  • Be actively engaged for three to four hours per volunteer shift.
  • Be trained by Skirball employees in relevant departments for specific volunteer posts.
  • Attend class meetings regularly.
  • Delight in working with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Be flexible and cooperative with Skirball employees.
  • Bilingual capabilities are a plus!
  • Be an active Skirball Member.
