1. How many students will be accepted into the VLA?

Shelby County Government will consider the needs of staff, the availability of other suitable programs, and the capacity of our program and resources. Space is very limited and will fill quickly.

2. Who can participate?

Only children of Shelby County Government employees will be considered. Of these children, any Shelby County School student entering grades K thru 3 who has pre-committed to enrolling in the virtual learning option for the FULL fall semester is eligible.

3. My 4th or 5th grader requires supervision. Can they attend?

Because of the unique needs of 4^th and 5^th grade students as they enter more robust testing environments and prepare for transition to middle school, the VLA will be limited to early learners only. We can provide a list of recommended virtual learning sites for other students.

4. My child does not attend Shelby County Schools. Can they attend?

Due to limitations of the program and a desire to serve all participants at a high level, this program is limited to students enrolled in SCS to ensure consistency in school day schedules, expectations, and resources.

5. Can I only apply if I work for the Mayor’s Administration?

This program is open to all Shelby County Government employees. Priority will be given to employees based on the needs of their child (and this program’s ability to meet those needs) and the employee’s AWS eligibility without any consideration for which elected official they work for.

6. Is there a cost to participate?

No. This program is free for Shelby County Government parents. Because of demand, we will adopt a strict attendance policy, which means that if children have any unexcused absences (“no call, no show”), extended excused absences without a doctor’s note, or more than three late arrivals in a 60-day period, they will not be allowed to return to the program. Additionally, parents who pick up their children after 5:30 PM will not be allowed to return.
