FAQS

  • At Standard Chartered, we define this as investing in solutions that not only gives financial returns, but also generates social and environmental benefits. Investors potentially improve the risk/ return profile of their portfolios by factoring Environmental, Social and Governance criteria in their investment decisions.

  • When we speak of sustainable investing, there is a certain stigma of doing good at the expense of returns. However, evidence has shown that there is a positive correlation between companies with strong ESG practices and their financial performance. The key here is long-term risk management as investors can better price ESG risks and their opportunities into their investment portfolios in addition to investing according to their values and priorities.

  • There are a variety of strategies to achieve this. First, there is exclusionary screening where investors can avoid companies that do not align with their values, such as tobacco producers. There is also ESG integration where environmental, social and governance factors are incorporated into financial analysis. We also offer thematic investing which focuses on one or more sustainability issues like climate change, clean water or education. Lastly, in impact investing, the primary focus is on the intended positive environmental and social outcomes.

  • We are an early leader in sustainable finance, focused on emerging markets because that is where we believe that the most impact can be achieved. We are constantly developing innovative solutions to finance some of the most challenging sustainability issues in our footprint. We also launched an ESG evaluation framework for our wealth solutions, to fight ESG and impact-washing.

  • As you start on your sustainable investing journey, having quality conversations is essential in identifying what your impact goals are and translating these into achievable outcomes. We recently developed the Impact Philosophy, which provides clients with a practical methodology to identify and map their passions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our Sustainable Series provides curated wealth solutions for clients to express personal values in their investments and capture sustainable development opportunities.

  • A sustainable portfolio would be a diversified one, across asset classes that match your risk and return goals. The key difference between a normal investment portfolio and a sustainable one would lie in the selection process of the assets and asset managers. Some investors may allocate a certain portion of their portfolio to sustainable strategies while others build portfolios that are 100% sustainable. You also need to consider that certain ESG strategies, like negative screening, can potentially impact a portfolio’s diversification. These portfolios can be unintentionally skewed towards certain themes or markets that are more advanced in ESG.

  • With our ESG evaluation framework, we conduct in-depth reviews on products seeking to be a part of our Sustainable Series. There are two parts to our evaluation. First, we screen for companies that have negative environmental and social impact. Second, the products are reviewed under our proprietary evaluation framework. There are five key areas in our review – the corporate profile, ESG expertise, ESG strategy, ESG integration and impact & measurement.
