September Meeting Recap

On September 7, the Board hosted an online meeting to approve proposed rules on graduation pathways, talk about legislative requests, and to discuss the Board’s upcoming strategic plan (outlining work moving forward through 2028).

Find the agenda, supporting materials, and links to TVW’s video footage of the meeting on SBE’s meeting site.

Meeting Highlights:

Graduation Pathway Rules – Legislation passed in the 2023 session made changes to high school graduation requirements - specifically the graduation pathway requirement and the High School and Beyond Plan requirement. The Board approved proposed rules for Chapter 180-51 WAC in response to this legislation. A hearing on the proposed rules will be held in late October or early November (likely November 1). Consideration of adoption of final rules is planned for the December 7, 2023 Board meeting.

Legislative Priorities – The Board discussed proposed legislative requests and priorities and plans moving forward in preparation for the 2024 legislative session. The Board will continue developing these priorities over the next couple months and is expected to approve the platform at the October meeting.

Strategic Plan - The Board discussed priorities for the next Strategic Plan, including what work the Board should focus on to improve the K-12 education system. The Board hosted a public listening session on September 7 to gather input on the plan, and will host another on September 20 at 12:00 p.m. on Zoom. Review the draft for discussion. The Board plans to approve a draft at the upcoming October meeting.

Upcoming Board Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for October 11-12 in Yakima. The Board has shifted its meetings calendar to come together on even months of the year. The agenda and materials will be posted one week in advance of the meeting on SBE’s meetings page.
