Workers’ Compensation Program

The Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) National Workers' Compensation Program develops policy, procedures, and training for VHA Network Workers' Compensation Coordinators and Facility Workers' Compensation staff.

Objectives

  • Ensure that employees who experience work-related injuries and illnesses clearly understand their rights and responsibilities in applying for and obtaining the workers' compensation benefits they are entitled to under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA).
  • Return injured or ill employees back to productive work within their medical limitations as soon as they are medically able, and monitor improvements in medical condition so that they may ultimately return to their pre-injury status.
  • Assess program integrity through financial and operational oversight, and continuous evaluation for process improvement—ensuring our role as the trusted agent for VHA workers' compensation management.

Staff roles

VHA Network Workers' Compensation Coordinators provide professional guidance, training, and oversight for the Facility Workers' Compensation staff through leadership, coaching, and mentoring.

VHA Facility Workers' Compensation staff ensure that:

  • Injured employees receive benefits for which they are entitled
  • Supervisors and managers understand their roles and responsibilities in the workers’ compensation process
  • Each stakeholder involved in the process performs their respective role, so employees may return to productive duty as soon as medically able to perform work

All program members are subject matter experts in the Workers' Compensation Program and are responsible for ensuring superior customer service and program support.
