1. What is scabies?
Scabies is a skin condition where tiny microbes called mites dig through the surface of your skin and lay eggs. Your skin reacts to this by developing a rash and an uncontrollable itching sensation. Scabies may affect the areas between your fingers and toes, waistline, genitals, folds of wrists, elbows and knees.
2. How does scabies spread?
Sharing of personal items such as clothes, towels and bedding is the most common way by which scabies spreads. Scabies mites crawl and can pass to another person during prolonged contact with the infected person and lead to infection.
3. What are the symptoms of scabies?
The main symptom of scabies is an intense itching sensation over the affected areas, especially in skin folds like between the fingers and toes. You may have rashes which appear like acne or form blisters and scales. Sores may appear on the skin due to scratching.
4. How is scabies diagnosed?
The diagnosis of scabies is done by microscopic examination of the infected portion of the skin. The surface of the infected skin is scrapped and observed under the microscope to examineand confirmthe presence of scabies mites, their eggs or faecal matter.
5. Is it possible to treat scabies?
Yes, it is possible to treat scabies completely. Your doctor will prescribe a lotion or cream to apply on the entire body neck downwards. Keep it for 8 to 14 hours and then wash it off with water. It is necessary to treat every person in the house who is in contact with the affected person. If sores are infected, you may be prescribed antibiotics. Sometimes oral drugs may be prescribed.
