Hazardous Area Training Programs

As a global leader in hazardous area protection, Pepperl+Fuchs has applied their decades of experience and expertise in this field to build a portfolio of training modules. The diverse topics relate to the principles involved in applications in potentially explosive atmospheres. In addition, some of these modules can be customized specifically to the customer’s needs to provide a unique training experience.

Currently, Pepperl+Fuchs has compiled content into 15 different modules or topics that can be selected from. Taken together, all 15 modules add up to over 21 hours of instruction.

These modules are designed to provide in-depth knowledge and understanding on each of these topics:

1. Fundamentals of Hazardous Areas: Gas & Vapor (duration 1 hour) - The module covers details on the fire triangle, material properties such as flammability limits, flash point, auto-ignition temperature, and others to help the individual understand how materials are grouped in both the Zone system and the Class/Division system. The typical audience is anyone who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment in hazardous areas.
2. Fundamentals of Hazardous Areas: Dust (duration 1 hour) - The module covers details on dust explosion pentagon, material properties, layer vs. cloud ignition temperature, and others to help the individual understand how materials are grouped in both the Zone system and the Class/Division system. The typical audience is anyone working, specifying or maintaining equipment in hazardous areas.
3. Hazardous Area Certifications Overview: ATEX, IECEx, and North America (duration 45 mins.) - This module covers certification and equipment marking details for North America, ATEX, and IECEx for Zone and Class/Division as applicable. The typical audience is anyone who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment in hazardous areas.
4. Detailed Product Certification for North America: NTRL and SCC (duration 45 mins.) - This module covers details on OSHA law, the NRTL program, product safety standards, product certification details, and equipment marking. The typical audience is anyone working, specifying or maintaining equipment in hazardous areas for applications in the USA and to some extent Canada.
5. Detailed Product Certification for Europe: ATEX (duration 45 mins.) - This module covers details about directives in general, specifics of the ATEX directive including certification requirements and quality system requirements, certificates, declaration of conformity, equipment marking, and standards used for certification. The typical audience is anyone who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment in hazardous areas in the EU.
6. Detailed Product Certification for General Globe Application: IECEx (duration 30 mins.) - This module covers details including certification requirements and quality system requirements, certificates, equipment marking, and standards used for certification. The typical audience is anyone who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment in hazardous areas covered by IECEx or similar systems.
7. Protection Concept of Intrinsic Safety (duration 4–5 hrs.) - This module provides details on the protection concept of intrinsic safety, basics of the protection concept, pros and cons of the type of protection, details on the various components of an intrinsically safe loop installation, and more. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the protection concept or who works with, specifies, or maintains intrinsic safety equipment or systems in hazardous areas.
8. Protection Concept of Pressurization (duration 3–4 hrs.) - The module provides details on the protection concept of pressurization. It covers the basics of the protection concept, pros/cons of this type of protection, the various types of pressurization applications, differences between gas/vapor and dust, pressurization control systems, installation considerations including system certification, and more. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the protection concept or who works with, specifies, or maintains pressurization equipment or systems in hazardous areas.
9. Protection Concept of Explosionproof or Flameproof (duration 2–3 hrs.) - The module provides details and differences as well as the basics and design aspects of the explosionproof or flameproof protection concept, details on selecting components and installing equipment, and details on the need for a complete certification solution. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the protection concept or who works with, specifies, or maintains explosionproof or flameproof equipment or systems in hazardous areas.
10. Overview of Various Protection Concepts (duration 1–1.5 hrs.) - The module provides details on various protection concepts for gas/vapor as well as dust applications. It is recommended to complete this module in conjunction with module 3 to have a better understanding of product certification and marking. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the protection concepts for installations in hazardous areas.
11. Overview of Equipment Installation per NEC (duration 2–3 hrs.) - The module reviews Articles 500 through 506 of the National Electric Code (NEC® or NFPA70) with an appropriate level of detail. It takes a look at equipment, wiring methods, and other important details that are sometimes confusing. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about installation according to the NEC or who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment or systems in hazardous areas covered by the NEC.
12. Standard for Equipment Panels with Intrinsic Safety Extensions (UL698A) (duration 1 hour) - This module reviews Standard UL698A with an appropriate level of detail. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the standard or who works with, specifies, or builds equipment or systems in hazardous areas that include panels built according to UL698A.
13. Certification and Installation under NEC for Class 1, Div. 2 Equipment (duration 1–2 hrs.) - This module specifically looks at equipment for Class I, Division 2 and how to install per the NEC. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the selection and installation of equipment for Class I, Division 2 or who works with, specifies, or maintains equipment or systems in Class I, Division 2 areas.
14. Equipment and Installation Maintenance in Hazardous Areas (UL60079-17) (duration 1–2 hrs.) - This module provides details on installation maintenance for select protection concepts from UL 60079-17. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about the maintenance of hazardous area equipment installations, or those who work with and maintain hazardous area equipment, or are responsible for the development of maintenance plans.
15. Enclosure Ratings: NEMA, UL, Type, IP (duration 1 hour) - This module provides overview and insight into three typical enclosure rating systems, NEMA, UL Type, and IP. The typical audience is anyone interested to learn more about enclosure ratings or those who work with, specify, or maintain hazardous area equipment.

We can provide training at our facility in Katy, TX, or at a location of your choice in the US or Canada.

Costs

The cost of the training depends on the location of the training, the cost of the instructor‘s time, the instructor‘s travel expenses, the training facility, and meals/refreshments for attendees.

All presentations and information that are part of the training will be made available to you for use and internal distribution.
