Function and Funding

Crime Stoppers is an organization within Harris County that is supported by public and private funding and dedicated to the apprehension of criminals. Its function is to encourage communication regarding criminal activity between the public and law enforcement, by "advertising" their existence and purpose, televising reenactments of high profile cases and offering monetary rewards for information leading to the identification and arrest of the perpetrator of virtually any crime committed in the Harris County area. The identity of all information providers is kept absolutely confidential through the use of a code number system.

Call Operator Duties

Crime Stoppers routinely functions as a phone bank communication center located within the city limits of Houston and operated by police representatives of a number of law enforcement agencies in the Harris County area. Its administration of business is coordinated through the Houston Police Department. One officer from this department is assigned to the Crime Stoppers unit working a ten hour shift, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. His primary responsibility is duty as a call-taker who receives information, channels it to the appropriate law enforcement agency and division when appropriate, arranges for monetary payment of reward to the confidential information provider.
