In a 20-year follow-up to the 2003 Unequal Treatment report, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2024 Ending Unequal Treatment report identifies major drivers of health care inequities in the U.S., health care system changes and progress toward reducing inequities since 2003, and gaps in the evidence base that research can address. The report provides actionable programmatic and policy recommendations for interventions to reduce health disparities.
NINR aims to address unequal treatment by supporting research that examines public health challenges through a health equity lens. Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, executive director of The Institute for Policy Solutions and distinguished professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, joined NINR for a discussion on the Ending Unequal Treatment report and advancing health equity research. He highlighted what the findings mean for the nursing workforce’s scientific agenda and for the elimination of inequities in health and health care.
Dr. Guilamo-Ramos discussed the implications that health care disparities have on the U.S. health care system. He highlighted several strategic opportunities where nursing research can address health inequities, including developing innovative health care delivery models, investing in the nursing workforce and inequity research, reforming health policy, and engaging with the community in meaningful ways.
