TWD programs foster the training and development of a strong and diverse biomedical research workforce. The division funds research training, career development and diversity-enhancing activities through a variety of programs at the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, faculty and institutional levels. In addition, TWD administers the NIH Common Fund initiative, Enhancing the Diversity of the NIH-Funded Workforce. The branches and programs are listed below. This branch manages individual fellowship, institutional research training, and research education grants to support undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and predoctoral cross-disciplinary research training, and to develop the capabilities of institutions to train these individuals, including those from populations and backgrounds that are underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce.

This branch manages individual predoctoral fellowships as well as institutional basic biomedical research training and medical science training programs to develop the capabilities of institutions to train students, including those from populations and backgrounds that are underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce.

Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
This branch manages competitive individual and institutional research training grants at the postdoctoral level, as well as career development awards. The branch also manages research project grants, professional meetings, research education grants and diversity supplements to promote workforce development across the career pathway.
Michael Sesma, Ph.D., Branch Chief
Enhancing the Diversity of the NIH-Funded Workforce, also known as the Diversity Program Consortium (DPC), is a trans-NIH program funded by NIH’s Common Fund and managed by NIGMS. Through this national collaborative, NIH works together with institutions to advance the DPC’s overarching goal of developing, implementing, assessing and disseminating innovative, effective approaches to research training and mentoring. The DPC consists of the following initiatives: BUILD, CEC, NRMN, SPAD, and DPC DaTA.
