The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set its highest risk level—a Class I recall—over potential salmonella contamination in salad products.
Why It Matters
According to the FDA, a Class I classification represents "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States every year.
While anyone can get sick from salmonella, groups with heightened risk of infection include children younger than five, adults 50 years or older with underlying medical problems, people 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms usually include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, the CDC says.

SunFed discovered the potential contamination and initiated a recall after being notified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the cucumbers in question were linked to reported cases of salmonellosis between October 12 and November 15, 2024.

What Happens Next
The release on the FDA's website said people should not consume the product, but instead discard it.
"The product(s) involved is past its shelf life and should already be out of distribution, but if consumers have any product they question, discard it," it said.
Consumers with any questions can contact SunFed's recall hotline at (888) 542-5849.
Newsweek contacted SunFed for comment via email on Thursday.
