Great Britain’s Monthly Energy Stats

Great Britain’s energy explained: September

September marked the end of 142 years of coal generating electricity in Great Britain with Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, the last remaining operational coal-fired power station, closing on 30 September. Coal accounted for just 0.3% of electricity generation in its final month of use.

Half of electricity came from zero carbon sources, peaking at 84% on 29 September at 10pm. Wind was our largest source of generation, providing 26.2% of our electricity with gas coming second at 25.3%.

The largest share of our gas (82%) came from UK and Norwegian gas fields, with storage withdrawal providing 13% and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports making up the remaining 5%.

Distribution networks transported 49% of our gas to homes and businesses. Power stations used 23% to generate electricity and we exported 23% to Europe and Ireland.
