A note from our Gallery curators and educators:
Art tells us many different stories of our world. Throughout art history, artists have been inspired by diverse topics and subject matter. Some images in our collection may require a parent, teacher, adult to guide younger children in meaningful interpretation and appreciation. For example, you will find that artists often use the figure as a way of studying human anatomy. The nude is an important genre in art celebrating the human body as a symbol of beauty, freedom and strength. When you come across images of nudity in art, do take the opportunity to talk with your children/students about how artists use the figure in art to invite discussions on enduring topics such as ideals, symbols and representations.
